Description

Chicco’s NextFit iX Zip is a convertible seat for your baby to graduate to at about one year old, when they outgrow their infant seat. (You can also start with the convertible car seats and skip the infant one altogether. Make an informed choice.)

This seat has several features to help you adjust it for your car. There’s a nine-position recline and dual bubble level indicators to verify that you’ve installed it at the correct angle. It has a “super cinch” strap on the LATCH anchors to make installation easier. It’s more like a pulley system than a tug-as-hard-as-you-can system. When it’s time to switch to forward-facing, the LATCH strap passes through the built-in slide path for proper repositioning. For installation with the seat belt, there’s a LockSure belt-tightening system that makes it easier to position, tighten and lock the belt into place.

The NextFit iX Zip has nine headrest positions (up from six in the previous version of the NextFit Zip). You can raise the headrest using one hand, and as you do, the shoulder strap position also raises and widens to accommodate your child without re-threading. There’s an easy-pull tightener for the chest strap as well, and a ComfortFlex feature that holds both sides of the waist belt out of the way until you are ready to buckle. A removable infant insert makes the seat snug for infants from 5 to 11 pounds.

Since your child has to stay in a convertible car seat until they are four years old, the NextFit iX Zip ranges from 5 to 40 pounds in the rear-facing position and from 22 to 65 pounds and 49” tall in the forward-facing position. It has a steel-reinforced frame and EPS energy-absorbing foam, and it exceeds all the safety specs from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

At 21” across, this seat is on the wider side, so if you have a narrow back seat or need to fit three kids, you’ll want to consider narrower options from Clek or Diono.

The NextFit iX Zip is very similar to Chicco’s NextFit (the basic model) and the NextFit Zip (which features a cover that zips off). The NextFit iX Zip has a few differientators. A big complaint about the NextFit is how hard it is to remove the cushion. In addition to crumbs, milk, or sand, your baby will throw up in their car seat at some point, so that could be fifty bucks well spent.

The NextFit iX Zip also has an updated, easier to use seat belt lockoff, three additional headrest options and an easier to adjust harness. Some parents really appreciate these upgrades, but they do cost a pretty penny.
