Description

Diono’s line of convertible car seats are top of the line—they are super safe and will see your child from infant to big kid (really big!). The company’s Radian seats are made to fit three across in most mid-sized back seats—a huge plus for 3+ kid families.

Safety-wise, the Radian 3R is engineered to protect your child. While it’s the base model for the Radian line, it’s still extraordinarily safe. The steel-alloy frame has aluminum reinforced sidewalls—this solid, metal construction makes this car seat stand out from its competition. On top of this, the seat is lined with EPS foam and has a patented Safe Stop harness to absorb shock in case of a crash.

As an important measure of safety, your child can ride in the safest, rear facing position in this seat up to 40 pounds. (Diono’s Radian RX and RXT seats are rated even higher and you use them for longer both rear facing and as a booster. The RXT comes with extra side-impact head protection too). Once your child outgrows the rear-facing seat, turn it around for a front facing car seat with a 5-point harness, and then convert it to a high-backed, belted booster seat. In theory, your child can ride in the booster up to 100 pounds—that’s more than most kids will need, yet a reassuring safety rating.

For newborns and smaller babies, the seat comes with plush head and body support cushions, so you could skip the infant car seat and just use this one if you like. The expiration on this seat is 10 years, about 2 to 4 years longer than most seats, so it really can see you through your child’s first decade.

The Radian 3R comes in high-quality fabrics with covers you can remove and machine wash (you’ll need to rethread the harness to get the cover off and on). It also has the distinction of being foldable. Yes, you read it right. The seat folds flat for storage or travel (the company sells a travel strap that can come in super handy). On top of that, it’s FAA rated for use on an airplane.

Drawbacks? Because of its steel frame, this is a super heavy seat, weighing in at 28.5 pounds. Usually you’ll be keeping your car seat in one place, so the weight is a non-issue. But if you need to move it around a lot, the weight becomes a consideration. And though this seat is compact from side to side, it takes up a lot of space in the car from front to back when installed angled back in the rear-facing position (front facing is just fine). You can purchase a separate angle positioner to help with this, but it may still be an issue when installed rear-facing in more compact cars or on an airplane.
