Description

Diono’s convertible car seats are top tier—they are super safe and will see your child from infant to big kid (really big!). The company’s Radian seats are made to fit three across in most mid-sized back seats—a huge plus for 3+ kid families or families who just want more space in the back seat. The 3RXT is the top model in the Radian line. There’s the less-expensive Radian 3R and Radian 3RX, but unlike those models, the 3RXT has an additional, 12-position reinforced head support.

Safety-wise, the Radian 3RXT is engineered above all else to protect your child. The steel-alloy frame has aluminum reinforced sidewalls—the solid, metal construction really makes this car seat stand out from the competition. On top of this, the seat is lined with EPS foam and has a patented Safe Stop harness to absorb shock in case of a crash, and the head support provides additional protection.

As an important measure of safety, your child can ride in the safest, rear facing position in this seat up to 45 pounds, a heavier weight rating than the Radian 3R model. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing seat, turn it around for a front facing car seat with a 5-point harness, and then convert it to a high-backed, belted booster seat. In theory, your child can ride in the booster up to 120 pounds—that’s more than most kids will need, yet a reassuring safety rating. For newborns and smaller babies, the seat comes with plush head and body support cushions, so you could skip the infant car seat and just use this one if you like. The expiration date on this seat is 10 years, about 2 to 4 years longer than most seats, so it really can see you through your child’s first decade.

The Radian 3RXT comes in high-quality fabrics with covers you can remove and hand-wash (you’ll need to rethread the harness to get the cover off and on). It also has the distinction of being foldable. Yes, you read it right. The seat folds flat for storage or travel (the company sells a travel strap that can come in super handy). On top of that, it’s FAA rated for use on an airplane.

Drawbacks? Because of its steel frame, this is a super heavy seat, weighing in at 27 pounds. Usually you’ll be keeping your car seat in one place, so the weight is a non-issue. But if you need to move it around a lot, the weight becomes a consideration. And though this seat is compact from side to side, it takes up a lot of space in the car from front to back when installed angled back in the rear-facing position (front facing is just fine). You can purchase a separate angle positioner to help with this, but it may still be an issue when installed rear-facing in more compact cars or on an airplane.
