Why buy a travel system? With one-stop-shopping, all your transportation needs for the first few months are covered, with the assurance that all the pieces will work together seamlessly. You’ll save a few dollars in the process too.

TAVO Stroller The TAVO stroller grows with your baby from birth to 50 pounds—which might even get you to age 5. For the early months, the PIPA infant car seat connects to it with a simple click.

The 2019 TAVO is similar to the original, with some great updates. The fabrics have been upgraded, and the stroller now comes standard with a leatherette handle bar.

Also new is the all-season seat: it has a mesh back and a washable seat pad for cooler weather that you can remove when it gets warm. Increased suspension means this stroller will ride well over varied terrain (that said, if you want to hike on trails or jog with your stroller, this won’t be the one for you).

Like the earlier version, the 2019 TAVO is loaded with user-friendly features, chiefly a super-easy, true one-handed fold and unfold, and one of the best canopies on the market. Once folded, the stroller has a trolley function, so you can tow it like rolling luggage. The wheels come off for storage. The huge UPF50+ removable canopy has lots of coverage options.

The zip-away visor or “Dream Drape” pulls down for full coverage, even in a full recline. There’s a mesh window at the top with a magnetic closure so you can peek in on your baby without waking them. Another mesh panel at the back can be covered or uncovered for air flow.

The spacious seat has four recline positions, including almost completely flat. In the fully reclined mode, the adjustable footrest folds up and snaps at the bottom to create a bassinet-like enclosure for young babies. An included removable (and washable) infant insert provides extra support for smaller riders. A swing-away bumper bar (also included) fits babies of all sizes, and detaches with your toddler is old enough to climb in on their own.

The TAVO’s storage basket is also really big, with spring-loaded edges and a smaller, zippered compartment for your keys or phone—fantastic for discreetly stashing away valuables.

To throw a few more features into the mix, the NUNA has lockable front swivel wheels and progressive suspension technology for a smooth ride. The telescoping handle bar adjusts to your height, and you can steer with one hand or brake with one foot with the one-touch braking mechanism.

If you’re looking for a down side, it would be TAVO’s ever-so-slightly too heavy weight for its class (24 lbs.), and a matching weighty price tag.

PIPA Infant Car Seat

For its part, the PIPA Lite LX is one of the most popular premium car seats out there. The featherweight seat is designed to keep your baby safe from both collisions and chemicals. At only 5.7 lbs, it weighs more than two pounds less than the original Nuna Pipa.

Designed in Europe, the Pipa Lite LX exceeds American safety standards. Lightweight Aeroflex foam absorbs and diffuses energy in case of a crash, minimizing the force transferred to your baby. The seat has side impact protection and a stability leg that folds down and wedges against the car floor, absorbing collision forces in an accident and stabilizing your baby’s ride the rest of the time.

The steel-reinforced base is easy to install, and a True Lock system with color-coded indicators (green means installation is complete; red tells you there’s more to do) lets you know when you have all the buckles fastened and locks in place.

One big drawback is that unlike the Nuna Pipa, the Pipa Lite LX MUST be used with the base. So while the Pipa is great for families who travel often by plane, cab or ride share and don’t want to carry the base with them, the Pipa Lite LX is better for parents who will be using the same car(s) regularly.

Another callout for the Pipa Lite LX is its high-end fabrics. All the materials used in this seat are flame resistant, but without any added fire retardant chemicals. The fabric is a comfy Merino wool and Tencel lyocell fiber blend—it’s soft, safe, naturally moisture wicking and environmentally friendly. The pull-down UPF 50+ canopy, or Dream Drape, creates a shady cocoon for your babe, while the mesh window lets you check in on them.

The downsides to this seat: that beautiful Merino fabric is hand-wash only, and, like the TAVO, all its great features come at a price.
