Few things are more important to your baby’s well-being—and yours—than sleep.

Baby gets tired. Baby sleeps. It’s simple, right? Not quite. Babies have different sleep needs, patterns and preferences—all of which change frequently during their first year of life. Most babies don’t sleep for longer than a few hours at a time until they’re at least three months old (and some not until later than that). And most infants don’t establish regular sleep patterns until about 6 months.

While no swaddle in the world can prevent the noisy neighbors from waking your little one, there are certain things you can do to make this whole “sleep thing” a lot easier.

Safe sleep is the best sleep: A safe sleep environment is one of the most important things you can give your new baby. Remove any loose blankets, soft toys, pillows, crib bumpers or anything else that could potentially cover your baby’s head. Lay them on a firm mattress covered with a soft, fitted sheet, dress them in a cozy but safe swaddle or sleep sack and set their room at a comfortable temperature (around 68-72°F).

Know everything is temporary: Whether caused by teething, travel, illness or growth spurts, sleep regressions are a normal part of babies development. When sleep regressions occur, it is helpful to keep things in perspective and remember the cyclical nature of baby’s sleep. The most common sleep regressions are at around 4 months and between 8 and 10 months.

What can you do during these stretches? Try to keep baby’s nap and bedtime consistent, start to create bedtime routines to signal sleep and keep the room dark when baby is sleeping.

And while the market for baby sleep gear can feel overwhelming at times, here are some baby sleep basics that can better help baby and you get the zzzs you all need.

A Bassinet

Safety, comfort and closeness…oh my! The HALO Bassinest makes tending to your little one in the middle of the night easier. Nursing and soothing baby is right at hand, thanks to the Bassinest’s 360-degree swivel motion and bedside wall that gently lowers and returns to a safe, upright position. The adjustable base works with the height of almost any bed, and the walls are made with breathable mesh. And parents (or parents to be) of twins, take note: the a Twin Bassinest Swivel Sleeper provides a comfy, safe sleept both of your babies.

Thanks to its roomy design, the HALO SleepSack allows ample space for baby’s legs and ensures proper hip development, even when they’re wrapped up like a little burrito. HALO’s fuss-free swaddle gives you a secure wrap that soothes baby’s startle reflex, and, as baby grows, allows for one or both arms to be out. Tip: you might want to have a few on hand to avoid having to doing even more laundry than you already are.

A Soother

Gone are those long nights of driving around a crying baby in the car in order to soothe them. HALO’s SnoozyPod has gentle vibrations that radiate through the mattress and calming sounds (heartbeat, white noise, soothing stream or rainforest) that block out household activity, making this an all-in-one soother that helps babies and toddlers get safe and comfortable sleep. Designed for a flat fit under any mattress, the SnoozyPod adapts to any crib or bed and is particularly helpful when transitioning from the crib to toddler bed to twin bed.

Wearable Blankets

The HALO SleepSack wearable blanket completely replaces loose crib blankets and provides sleeveless neck-to-toe coverage. HALO is the original maker of the SleepSack wearable blanket, created to keep baby at a cozy temperature all night long when they’re ready to transition from a swaddle. And with an inverted zipper, diaper changes by nightlight aren’t a hassle. Just like the HALO SleepSack Swaddle, it’s a good idea to have multiple wearable blankets on hand because—let’s face it—accidents will happen.

Fitted Crib Sheets

Gentle enough for baby’s tender skin but durable enough to stand up to multiple washes, the classic crib sheet by Aden + Anais is the gold standard in baby linens. These fit snuggly so they won’t come loose during your little one’s wiggling, and are breathable, thanks to 100% super-soft cotton muslin. And with timeless prints and adorable patterns, these sheets will add the perfect finishing touch to your nursery.

Cotton Pajamas

Sweet dreams start with soft jammies—and they don’t come much softer than these 2-piece sets from Aden + Anais. Ideal for babies and toddlers ages 12 months to 4 years, these 100% cotton pajamas are not only made for comfort, but for ease and safety. The snug fit and comfy cuffs ensure that sleeves and pant legs stay put while your little one sleeps, and an elastic waistband makes the bottoms easy to take on and off. For younger babies, these cute kimono-style jammies are adorable.

While there’s no one magic item that will guarantee baby sleeps soundly all night long—babies are babies after all!—giving them a safe spot to snooze and cozy, soothing swaddles and accessories can help point you in the right sleepy direction.
