Is buybuy BABY Going Out of Business?.

UPDATE: The buybuy BABY retail website relaunched under new ownership on October 27, 2023. Additionally, 11 buybuy BABY stores on the East Coast reopened for business on November 18, 2023.

In August 2023, it was announced that the buybuy BABY intellectual property rights were bought by Dream on Me, a baby products retailer. Read more about it through NBC’s coverage.

You may have heard the news that Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and closed all stores in June 2023. All divisions of Bed Bath & Beyond, including buybuy BABY, temporarily closed stores across the country.

Although 11 stores and the retail website have reopened as of November 2023, this news can be concerning for families who had registries and gift cards with buybuy BABY prior to its backruptcy, as the relaunched company has announced that they aren’t able to accept gift cards issued prior to August 1, 2023, and customers are unable to access registries that were created prior to the website relaunch.

Is buybuy BABY Going Out of Business?

Buybuy BABY temporarily went out of business in the summer of 2023, along with the parent company Bed Bath & Beyond. The company officially filed for bankruptcy on April 23rd, 2023; all 360 physical locations across the US and Canada liquidated their inventories before closing.

The buybuy BABY website and 11 physical buybuy BABY stores reopened in the fall of 2023 under new ownership. Bed Bath & Beyond reopened as an online-only retailer, also under new ownership.

Will I lose my buybuy BABY registry?

According to the relaunced buybuy BABY website, “we do not have any previous registry account information available.” This is tough news for families who were previously registered with buybuy BABY, since there’s currently no way to revisit your old registry live on the website.

Can I transfer my buybuy BABY registry?

If you happened to download or screenshot your old buybuy BABY registry before losing access, then you’re in luck: you can recreate it using a universal baby registry like Babylist.

(If you don’t have a copy of your buybuy BABY registry, you can still create a baby registry from scratch on Babylist! We have a ton of product recommendations, just in case you don’t remember what was on your previous registry.)

Once you’ve manually transferred your buybuy BABY registry to Babylist, your Babylist registry will match the items from your previous registry and show all available retailers for each product.

The exceptions are any “exclusive” products that could only be found at buybuy BABY, like special colors, patterns or fabrics. If you had any buybuy BABY exclusives on your registry, you’ll need to swap them for similar ones sold by other stores.

If you’re having trouble locating a good match for any exclusive product, don’t hesitate to contact our customer service team—our registry consultants can help you find a comparable product.

Can I still use my buybuy BABY registry discount?

Since the relaunched buybuy BABY doesn’t have access to registries with the old company, any registry discount you previously had won’t be applicable for online or in-store purchases.

If you haven’t had your baby yet and have transferred your registry to Babylist, you’ll get a 15% Babylist registry completion discount that you can use on any items that are also sold in the Babylist Shop. Keep in mind that you’ll have to make purchases through the Babylist Shop in order to use your Babylist registry discount, even if the item is also sold at buybuy BABY or another retailer.

Can I still get the buybuy BABY Welcome Box?

There hasn’t been any news about the buybuy BABY Welcome Box being restocked upon the company’s relaunch, but there are other baby-themed welcome boxes available out there.

Once you’ve created a Babylist registry, you can also get a Hello Baby Box! While the offerings change every few months, past boxes from Babylist have included bodysuits, swaddles, pacifiers, bottles, diapers and wipes, nursing pads and breast milk storage bags.

To qualify for a Hello Baby Box from Babylist, here’s what you need to do:

  • Add three items to your registry directly from the Babylist Shop.
  • Add three items to your registry from other stores. (The items transferred from your buybuy Baby registry count for this!)
  • Make a minimum purchase totaling $30 from the Babylist Shop (this purchase can also be made from your registry by a friend or family member).
  • Verify your address and pay $8.95 + tax, where applicable, for shipping.

Do buybuy BABY gift cards still work?

According to the website, the relaunched buybuy BABY is “not able to honor gift cards that were issued and unused prior to August 1, 2023. Gift card balances from preexisting digital and physical gift cards expired under previous buybuy Baby ownership.”

Can I return buybuy BABY purchases?

If you purchased anything during the buybuy BABY official closing sale, keep in mind that all sales were final and no returns will be accepted.
