Is buybuy Baby Going Out of Business?

You may have heard the news that Bed Bath & Beyond is closing 150 stores across the US and Canada and could file for bankruptcy this year. Among the store closures are divisions of Bed Bath & Beyond, including buybuy Baby—there are six buybuy Baby stores closing and currently holding liquidation sales.

This news can be concerning for families who have registries and gift cards with buybuy Baby, and as the only nation-wide brick-and-mortar chain in the US dedicated solely to baby products (after the closing of Babies ‘R Us in 2018), many expectant parents rely on their stores to test baby gear firsthand.

If you have a registry with buybuy Baby, don’t worry; you can still get everything you need for your baby, and you don’t have to start your registry from scratch.

Is buybuy Baby Going Out of Business?

buybuy Baby and its parent company, Bed Bath & Beyond, are not going out of business. To compensate for higher-than-expected losses in 2022, a portion of stores are being permanently closed and their inventories liquidated. There will still be locations open across the US and Canada for both Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy Baby.

Wondering if your local store has been affected? Bed Bath & Beyond released a list of the store locations with planned closures or closures already underway. If a store on the closure list is in your area, you might find good deals during the liquidation sale to cross things off your baby registry.

Can I transfer my buybuy Baby registry?

You can! Any buybuy Baby registry can easily be transferred to Babylist with just a few clicks:

From the Babylist Website:

  • Make sure your buybuy Baby registry is set to “Public” visibility (not “Private”). If it’s set to “Private,” your registry items can’t be transferred to Babylist.
  • Go to your Babylist registry homepage. If you don’t have a Babylist baby registry yet, it only takes a couple of minutes to get started.
  • On the right side just below Finish Your Registry Setup, click on Transfer Another Registry.
  • For transferring your buybuy Baby registry, you’ll want to choose Transfer Items (not Add Registry Link). That way your buybuy Baby registry items are inputted directly into your Babylist registry, so you won’t lose them in case you can’t access your buybuy Baby registry anymore.
  • Choose buybuy Baby from the Select a Store dropdown list, paste your buybuy Baby registry link and click Transfer Items.

From the Babylist Mobile App:

  • Make sure your buybuy Baby registry is set to “Public” visibility (not “Private”). If it’s set to “Private,” your registry items can’t be transferred to Babylist.
  • Tap the menu bar in the top left corner.
  • Tap Registry.
  • Under Actions, tap Transfer or Link a Registry.
  • For transferring your buybuy Baby registry, you’ll want to choose Transfer Items (not Add Registry Link). That way your buybuy Baby registry items are inputted directly into your Babylist registry, so you won’t lose them in case you can’t access your buybuy Baby registry anymore. Tap Next.
  • Select buybuy Baby from the list and tap OK.
  • Search for your buybuy Baby registry using your name and tap View Registry.
  • Confirm that the buybuy Baby registry you’re seeing is yours, then tap Transfer Registry.

Can Babylist match the items on my buybuy Baby registry?

Yes! Once you’ve transferred your buybuy Baby registry to Babylist, your Babylist registry will show all available retailers for each product, including any products that you originally registered for through buybuy Baby.

The exception to this is any “exclusive” products that can only be found at buybuy Baby, usually unique colors, patterns or fabrics for products that can otherwise be widely found at other retailers. Bed Bath & Beyond has warned of low inventory, so if you’ve registered for any buybuy Baby exclusives, consider swapping for similar ones sold by other stores.

If you’re having trouble locating a good match for any exclusive product, don’t hesitate to contact our customer service team—our Happiness Heroes can help you find a comparable product.

Can I still use my buybuy Baby registry discount?

Your 15% completion discount on your buybuy Baby registry will still work as long as your buybuy Baby registry is still active and you purchase directly from that registry. If you delete your buybuy Baby registry at any point (including after transferring the items to Babylist), your buybuy Baby discount will disappear.

If you haven’t had your baby yet and have transferred your registry to Babylist, you’ll get a 15% Babylist registry completion discount that you can use on any items that are also sold in the Babylist Shop. Keep in mind that you’ll have to make purchases through the Babylist Shop in order to use your Babylist registry discount, even if the item is also sold at buybuy Baby or another retailer.

Can I still get the buybuy Baby Welcome Box?

If you already have a buybuy Baby registry, the Registry Welcome Box is available for purchase ($10) online and in-store while supplies last. Keep in mind that supplies may be low due to current store liquidations and company-wide inventory shortages.

Once you’ve created a Babylist registry, you can also get a Hello Baby Box! While the offerings change every few months, past boxes from Babylist have included bodysuits, swaddles, pacifiers, bottles, diapers and wipes, nursing pads and breast milk storage bags.

To qualify for a Hello Baby Box from Babylist, here’s what you need to do:

  • Add three items to your registry directly from the Babylist Shop.
  • Add three items to your registry from other stores. (The items transferred from your buybuy Baby registry count for this!)
  • Make a minimum purchase totaling $10 from the Babylist Shop (this purchase can also be made from your registry by a friend or family member).
  • Verify your address and pay $8.95 + tax, where applicable, for shipping.

Do buybuy Baby gift cards still work?

buybuy Baby gift cards will still work both in store and online as long as they have products to sell. This means that even if the company does file for bankruptcy (which they haven’t yet), they will likely still accept gift cards while they liquidate their inventory. (And liquidation sales are a good opportunity to find deals on baby gear!)

Can I return buybuy Baby purchases?

Unless an item is marked as “Final Sale,” buybuy Baby will continue to accept returns until otherwise reported. If a store is permanently closing and liquidating their inventory, all sales will be final and no returns will be accepted.
