Stylish, Practical Nursery Picks This First-Time Mom Would Get from Walmart

Designing a nursery can be one of the most exciting parts of preparing for a baby, but it can also get overwhelming quickly. Parents want the room to feel stylish and personal, while still choosing pieces that can handle real life: late-night feeds, diaper changes, extra storage and everyday messes.

For first-time mom Makayla Marie Alexander, who is in her third trimester, the process has felt especially emotional.

“After going through IVF and fighting so hard for this moment, every nesting task, every milestone, just hits a whole lot deeper,” Alexander said.

As she and her husband, Josh, get ready to welcome their baby, decorating their nursery has become one special way to create a space for the child they’ve been waiting for.

“This season has truly been such a beautiful and highly emotional project for Josh and me,” she said. “I think I’m most excited to bring warmth and brightness into this room, creating a space that feels safe, soft and full of life.”

As she started imagining the space, Alexander focused on pieces that felt just as practical as they were beautiful, with soft textures and thoughtful details made for real life with a newborn. Now that she’s nearly finished decorating her own nursery, she’s sharing inspiration for other parents creating theirs. Read on for the Graco nursery picks she’d add to her nursery from Walmart.

The stylish wood crib she’d build around

 .

For a nursery with cozy character, Alexander is especially drawn to the Graco Olivia 3-in-1 Convertible Crib. With clean lines and rounded details, it has the kind of relaxed, timeless look she can imagine styling with color and texture.

“I absolutely love the warm driftwood finish,” she said. “I’d pair it with fun wallpaper, other wood accents for a seamless room, add layered textures to the walls, pops of color through art, bedding and rugs.”

The solid wood Olivia is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified and includes an adjustable mattress support base with fo

ur height options and converts from crib to toddler bed and daybed, something Alexander appreciates.

“I also love that it’s a piece that can grow with my baby,” she said. “There’s something special about choosing furni

ture that isn’t just for one short season, but can carry through different stages as he gets older.”

The customizable crib with built-in storage

 .

The Graco Story Customizable 5-in-1 Convertible Crib with Drawer offers a different kind of design opportunity she’s a fan of.

“I love that this crib gives you the option to feel slightly more personal,” Alexander said. “With the customizable artwork panel, I would probably choose something that ties into the rest of the nursery like a soft pattern or meaningful print, or colors that pull from the wallpaper and make the crib feel like it really belongs in the room.”

That personalization is especially helpful when the bigger furniture pieces are more neutral, but the thing she’d probably appreciate most day to day is the extra storage.

“The built-in drawer is also such a practical detail, especially in a nursery where you can never have too much storage,” she said. “I’d probably use it for things we would reach for often: extra crib sheets, sleep sacks, swaddles, blankets or even back up pajamas.”

The Story also has four mattress height options and converts from crib to toddler bed, daybed and full-size bed with headboard and optional footboard. And if personalization isn’t what you’re going for, the headboard is reversible for a more classic aesthetic.

The everyday essentials that make the room work

Once the bigger pieces are in place, the essentials do a lot of the daily heavy lifting. For Alexander, the crib mattress and changing pad come down to comfort, safety and ease.

“Those are the pieces you use every single day, so I would want something that feels supportive for him, easy to clean, and made to hold up through all the little messes and moments that come with having a baby,” she said.

Looking for gear that lasts, she gravitated to the Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress; it has a soft cover with an easy-to-unzip, machine-washable design, plus a waterproof sleep surface for simpler cleanup. For parents

prioritizing their baby’s air quality, it’s OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Certified and GREENGUARD Gold Certified, too.

“I think [it’s] a great option because it feels like one of those pieces that can be used beyond just the newborn stage,” she said.

With all the diaper changes to come, the Graco Premium Contoured Changing Pad—also GREENGUARD Gold Certified—stood out for its contoured side walls, built-in safety belt with ultra-soft buckle cover, water-resistant materials (hello, surprise leaks), two safety straps and non-skid bottom to help keep it secure on the changing surface.

“With the changing pad, I love the idea of anything that makes diaper changes feel a little more manageable! Something comfortable, contoured, and easy to wipe down,” Alexander said.

What really makes a dream nursery

After everything it took for her to get here, she wants her baby’s nursery to be well decorated and ready for real life. But more than that, she wants it to be welcoming.

“It’s honestly hard to put into words, but it feels like we’re finally preparing a home for the little life we’ve been longing for,” she said.
