How many types of baby carriers are there?

There are three styles of baby carriers: wraps (fabric wraps that secure baby to your body), soft structured carriers (backpack-style with buckles), ring slings (single-shoulder fabric slings) and hip seat carriers. Many families opt for two carriers: one for the newborn stage and one for older babies or toddlers. How long can you wear a baby carrier?

Wear time depends on the carrier type, your comfort and baby's comfort. Wraps and soft structured carriers can typically be worn for several hours. Hip seat carriers are usually designed for shorter wearing sessions. Take breaks, stay hydrated, pay attention to your baby and body.

Which baby carrier is best if for bad backs?

Look for a carrier that distributes baby's weight over both shoulders and around your waist. Stretchy wraps fit the bill for the newborn days. Once baby reaches about 15-20 lbs, consider moving to a well-fitting soft structured carrier with padded shoulder straps and a wide waist belt.

Do you need a different carrier for a newborn than for an older baby?

While some carriers are designed specifically for newborns, there are many that work right from day one. These "all in one" carriers often boast several carry positions and grow with your baby. However, some families prefer using a wrap for newborns and switching to a structured carrier later.
