Video: This Jogging Stroller Turns Into a Bike Trailer in Minutes
Plus: it has extra storage, a detachable backpack and a pet-friendly mode.
By Babylist Team
While there are a lot of different options for outdoor-friendly baby gear, sometimes it’s easier to have one really great piece that can do multiple things. Which is exactly what the Baby Jogger City Prix was designed to do. It’s a jogging stroller that turns into a bike trailer in just a few minutes (and yup, it already landed on our best new baby products of 2024 list).
We sent Julie, a Babylist mom of two, the City Prix to see just how this one stroller can make for smoother outdoor activities with your permanent plus one in tow. Watch her review in the video above or keep reading for what you should know before buying a jogging stroller or adding one to your Babylist registry.
In this article:
What sets the City Prix apart from other jogging strollers?
Most jogging strollers are just that…joggers. And while there are bike trailers that also function as strollers, they aren’t usually built with the body or suspension for jogging. If you do find gear that is both a jogging stroller and a bike trailer, it often requires a fair amount of deconstruction to go from one mode to the other. Instead, the City Prix combines everything you need for both modes in one piece of gear (when you get it with the conversion kit).
Whether you’re using the City Prix as a jogging stroller or bike trailer, there are some features that are super helpful in both modes:
-
Easy-fold: The City Prix folds with one hand in either bike trailer mode or jogging stroller mode. Plus: it stands on its own once it’s folded so you can tuck it in a corner and get it out of the way until you need it again. (See that at the 4:07 mark in Julie’s review.)
-
Weather protection: Hitting the running or biking trail with a baby can expose them to the elements. City Prix comes with a large UV50+ canopy and weather shield in stroller mode that can also fasten to the trailer to protect your kiddo from dust, debris and bugs.(2:47)
-
Extra storage: Because you’ll need somewhere to put all your baby’s essentials when you’re on the trail, there’s a big storage basket under the stroller seat and a zippered pocket for your phone and keys. (1:57)
-
Bonus backpack: For on-the-go storage, the back of the stroller actually zips off into a backpack which is super useful for keeping essentials with you after parking your stroller. (2:05)
The City Prix in jogging stroller mode
Jogging strollers are built differently than everyday strollers, which are mainly designed for things like walks around the neighborhood or running errands with baby (a.k.a. environments with smooth, leveled ground). On the other hand, jogging strollers like the City Prix are made with special features like larger wheels and added suspension to help you safely navigate uneven terrain and minimize the bumps your kiddo feels along the way.
In jogging stroller mode, the City Prix has a few standout extras which you can see starting at 0:21:
-
Front wheel swivel lock: You’ll want the front wheel of the City Prix in the locked position when you’re jogging to keep you on course and prevent wobbling. When you’re ready to go from a jog to a stroll, the front wheel unlocks so it can swivel for a smoother ride. (1:26)
-
Adjustable handlebar: Rotate the handle bar up or down for your most comfortable run. This also comes in handy if you have parents of different heights. (1:36)
-
One-hand recline: If your baby wants to sit higher up or lean a little back, it’s easy to adjust their recline with just one hand. (1:43)
The City Prix in bike trailer mode
In minutes, the City Prix goes from jogging stroller to bike trailer that you can use to bring baby along on bike rides as soon as they’re 12-months-old. In this mode, you can use it until your kiddo is 40 inches tall (or about the height of an average four year old); other bike trailers max out around 27 inches.
While you can start with the City Prix as a jogging stroller and get the conversion kit later, the City Prix Bundle with Trailer comes with it upfront and includes a safety flag, weather shield and bug/sun shield. To see the step-by-step from stroller to trailer, jump to the 3:09 mark.
Important safety features to look for
Babies need to be able to control their movements and hold their head up before running or biking with them, so keeping them safe is an important part of including them in your active lifestyle.
The City Prix is designed with lots of upleveled safety features for extra peace of mind along every stroll, jog or bike:
- Tires and all-wheel suspension: Like most jogging strollers, the wheels on the City Prix are larger—but they’re also pneumatic, which means they’re made of rubber and filled with air. This helps to keep baby as stable and comfy as possible, especially if you’re running on uneven trails or paths. (0:48)
- Deceleration brake: Unlike traditional strollers that place brakes next to rear wheels, jogging stroller brakes are often located on the handlebar. With the City Prix, this gives you easier access to control your speed—important if you’re heading downhill or need to stop altogether. (1:03)
- Hand strap and reflectors: For added security, there’s also a handlebar tether strap you can fasten to your wrist as an extra safety measure. And for better visibility in the streets, the stroller has Integrated safety reflectors. (1:17)
- An included foot brake: Unlike some other jogging stroller bike trailer combos, the City Prix has a hand brake and a foot brake, keeping you in control while moving. You actually have to purchase braking systems separately for some other brands. (2:35)
Bonus: Pet trailer mode
Remember when we said some bike trailers are made for pets? Well, the City Prix can also be used to bring your furry friend along, too. There’s even a harness that clips onto their collar to help keep them snug and secure. And when you need to switch back to using the bike trailer for your baby, don’t worry—its soft fabric is made of recycled materials for easy wipedowns.
Is the City Prix right for your family?
If you’re looking for a versatile jogging stroller that’s easy to maneuver, the Baby Jogger City Prix just might be the front runner for you. Since you can just start with it as just a jogging stroller, you’ll have time to see how active you want to be with your baby in tow. As you get more comfortable bringing them outdoors, you have the option of getting the conversion kit if you don’t want to be locked into the bundle up front.
But because it is still a true 2-in-1, it eliminates the bulk of storing a jogging stroller and a separate bike trailer. Plus: its convertible design makes it more convenient to use out on the trail—you can’t really beat a setup that takes just a few minutes. Compared to other big multisport strollers that have a higher price tag, the City Prix’s upleveled features like that one-handed fold and detachable backpack also make for a more parent-friendly experience.
