No matter how great your stroller is or how much it can hold, sometimes you just want a wagon.

Perfect for picnics, the farmers’ market and all kinds of outdoor adventures, a wagon makes it easier to tow your tot (or tots) when you have stuff to carry or they just need a fun ride. It’s also handy when you want to take a stroller-less stroll without the kids chiming in with “Pick me up!” or “How much further?”

When shopping for a wagon, think about how you’ll be using it—if you know you’ll be on rough trails, you’ll want a wagon that’s sturdier, with tires that can stand up to the terrain. Just heading out for strolls around the neighborhood or to the park? You can get away with a simpler model.

Consider these wagon options, which all have different merits, depending on your needs.

All-Terrain Adventure Wagon

Why We Love It

“Cross-terrain” and “comfort suspension” might make you think you’re shopping for a car, but these are actually some of the features on the Veer Cruiser, which offers the best of a stroller and a wagon combined. Because it’s designed like a mountain bike, it can handle tough terrain, from trails to the beach. With airless tires and swivel-wheel steering, you can push it, pull it and avoid obstacles while your child rides comfortably. While some accessories you might think of as necessities (the retractable canopy, for instance) come at an extra cost, a snack tray and two drink holders are included.

Keep in Mind

It’s compatible with many infant car seat brands (adapter not included), and it works with kids up to 55 lbs, so you will have it for awhile, from infant to 5 years old. And while it’s not cheap, it is pretty plush. Oh, and Disneyland fans, take note: this is one of the only wagons allowed in the Magic Kingdom, because of its push (not pull) functionality.

Age Range: 0-5+
Weight of Wagon: 32.5 lbs.

The Old-School Wagon

Why We Love It

Many of us had a version of this wagon as a kid, and that nostalgia might draw you to the Radio Flyer for your own family. With wooden stake sides and air tires, it has an all-steel body and an extra-long handle that folds easily for storage, and the controlled turning radius prevents it from tipping over.

“The all-terrain tires make it much easier to take in the grass.”

Keep in Mind

This wagon features 10-inch air tires that are meant to handle most terrain, though it may not stand up to serious offroading. But the weight capacity is great—it holds up to 200 lbs.!

The Versatile Wagon

Why We Love It

Maybe you love the Radio Flyer brand, but you don’t need something as all-terrain as the steel and wood wagon? Consider this model, which, as the name suggests, folds easily and is three wagons in one. Unzip the side panel to change the wagon from hauling or riding mode into bench seating mode. Two cup holders and quiet-ride tires are included, so don’t stress if you hit nap time when on your stroll. Parents find it to be dependable, and the versatility is wide—you can take it the park, a picnic and even through an amusement park (if they allow wagons!), and it’s great for hauling kids or gear.

“Easily folds up and opens up. Also can be used as a bench!”

Keep in Mind

There’s also a version with a canopy (or you can purchase it separately) and all-terrain tires.

A Wagon They Can Pull

Why We Love It

If you’re looking for a wagon your kiddo can use to pull their toys, rather than one you use to pull them, consider the Little Tikes Lil’ Wagon. It’s made to use inside and out, with tires that won’t damage indoor surfaces but will also handle the ground outside. This wagon isn’t meant for carrying kids, but parents love how happy their kids are pulling around their dolls, stuffed animals and other toys in it. This wagon is also the perfect way to get your kids to tote their own items, while having fun at the same time.

Keep in Mind

It’s not very big, so it doesn’t take up much space, and it has a handle that folds flat for storage.

Additional Specs
Weight Capacity: Not meant to hold children
Age Range: While not meant to hold kids, children 1.5-4 yrs. like to pull it
Weight of Wagon: 4.89 pounds

A Cool Two Seater

Why We Love It

Other larger wagons can fit two kids, but the Step2 Wagon for Two is a perfect two-seater option, with two contoured seats with deep leg room, two seat belts and two cup holders on the sides, plus storage underneath. As with other wagons, this one has a handle that easily folds under for storage, but it comes with a door that has a latch.

Keep in Mind

While some parents wish the door was a little easier for their little ones to operate on their own, others appreciated this feature, liking the fact that their kids would need a grown up to help them with it.

What Babylist Parents Say

“It’s great. Easy to use! Wish it had an optional canopy option attachment that we could purchase as an add on.” -Melissa C.

Additional Specs
Weight Capacity: Up to 75 lbs.
Age Range: 1.5-5 yrs.
Weight of Wagon: 24 lbs.

The Wagon with Storage

Why We Love It

This wagon is built for two, has a canopy to protect from the elements, and the seats can easily turn into a table or a flat bed. With six cup holders/snack holders (including two for the grownups), this wagon has more storage than most wagons, especially when you turn it into a flat bed. It’s made for indoor and outdoor use and has seatbelts to keep your kids safe and secure.

“It’s easy to clean.”

Keep in Mind

This Step2 wagon has a nice “trunk” storage area, where you can stash keys, toys and extra snacks.
