Why I Love It: Newton Baby's Breathable Crib Mattress
This 100% breathable crib mattress brings me SO much peace of mind, especially during the newborn days.

We’re talking to real parents about the baby gear they just can’t live without, from $20 snot suckers to $300 breathable crib mattresses and everything in between.
Why I Love It: Newton Baby Breathable 2-Stage Crib Mattress
Why did I get it?
Jen, mom of two boys ages nine and two (and Babylist’s Gear Editor), lives in a multi-story house in the suburbs outside of Chicago.
There’s a seven-year age gap between my kids, so I knew I needed a new crib mattress before my second son was born. I write about baby gear for a living, but I was still so overwhelmed when the time came to add one to my baby registry. Did I want something organic or GREENGUARD Gold Certified? Did it need to be dual-sided? How important was the weight? How much should it cost? And why are there so many choices?
Once I spent a little time researching, I landed on the Newton Baby mattress. The breathability is what sold me on it. When I was a first-time mom, anxiety around my baby’s sleep was one of my biggest challenges, so I wanted to do everything I could to avoid that this time around. I also remember how heavy my first crib mattress was—and how difficult that made it every time I had to change the crib sheet—and liked that this mattress weighed just over 10 pounds.

Why do I love it?
There are so many things I love about this mattress, it’s hard to choose just a few. But if I had to…
- Breathability. My little guy can smash his face into it (which he has many times) and still breathe just fine. This brought me so much peace of mind, especially during the first six months or so.
- Weight. It’s so light and easy to pop out of the crib every time I need to change the sheets. I actually dreaded changing the crib with my old mattress; it was so bulky and cumbersome, and I broke out in a sweat every time! That’s definitely not the case now.
- Materials. It’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which I wasn’t sure if I would care about at the time, but two years down the road I’m happy about. I also love that it’s recyclable and doesn’t use any foam, springs or glue.

Who would I recommend it to?
If you’re at all anxious about your child’s sleep, I think a breathable mattress like this can help. It’s also a good choice for a family who may be conscious of products’ chemical emissions and who prefers a crib mattress that’s easy to keep clean.
