Nuna’s New Stroller Has a Feature We’ve Never Seen Before

It’s rare to test a stroller that’s a true gamechanger. Sure, some have super-easy folds, hidden storage pockets and cool seat features to keep babies and big kids extra comfortable. The new Nuna SWIV stroller has all of those features, plus back wheels that have full 360-degree rotation, which allows the stroller to glide side-to-side and forward and back. Watch us take it for a spin in the video above, or keep reading for what you should know before buying it or adding it to your Babylist.

Why You’d Want 4 Swivel Wheels

Remember the era of two-wheeled suitcases and how the switch to four wheels meant your suitcase could move front to back and side to side, making it so. much. easier? The wheels on the SWIV are designed to move that same way.

Now if you’re only planning neighborhood strolls on sidewalks or paths, this may not be a big deal. But if your everyday travels will take you to places where you might need to tetris yourself in and out—like elevators, public transportation or small shops—that added range of motion can be a huge help.

360° Swivel Wheels = Not Your Standard Stroll

Unlike other strollers, the SWIV has two strolling modes: You can use it like a regular stroller with the rear wheels locked in the forward position (the ideal way to stroll if you’re just looking to move forward—like on a walk), or you can activate swivel mode if you need to maneuver out of a tight spot. This is much easier than having to physically lift the stroller up and over sideways, which is the only option with traditional strollers.

Here’s how it works (or skip to the 0:52 mark in the video above): Hold the handlebar just as you would for regular pushing while pressing the button on the back of the handlebar to unlock the back wheels. This allows you to easily glide the stroller around in any direction, with the same one-handed steering and easy maneuverability that Nuna strollers are known for. When you release this button, the rear wheels quickly lock back into place.

So why not just a permanently swiveling stroller? If you’ve ever been to an IKEA and used one of their carts, all four wheels swivel. When you’re trying to go forward and it ends up going sideways, it can take a lot of core strength to redirect. So it’s pretty useful to be able to quickly switch back to standard stroller mode when you don’t need that extra range of motion.

There Are Multiple Ways to Ride

The SWIV seat can either face baby’s caregiver or face out to the world, with three recline positions and a rotating and removable arm bar (Check it out at 0:38 in the video). It also has the luxe seat features commonly found on many Nuna strollers, like:

  • An all-season seat: It comes with a merino wool removable insert that’s cozy in the winter and can be removed for a breathable mesh seat back for the summer.

  • A UPF 50+ water-repellent canopy: This one’s also extendable, with a mesh window and flip-out visor for extra protection and shade.

  • No-rethread harness: You can easily adjust the straps for growth spurts or different riders without taking them completely apart.

  • Self-guiding magnetic buckle: This secures the harness by easily gliding to open and close.

You can use the stroller seat once baby’s able to sit up independently, but If you want to use the stroller frame from birth, you can buy the LYTL bassinet (which also comes with a stand you can use at home) or you can turn the SWIV into a travel system with a Nuna PIPA infant car seat. This stroller comes with a car seat ring adapter that can stay on the stroller when it’s folded, so you don’t have to keep track of it in your car or home when it’s not in use.

What Else Makes the SWIV Stand Out

The SWIV is the first Nuna stroller to have a carbon fiber-reinforced alumnium frame, which at 21.8 pounds, makes it lighter than a lot of other full-size strollers. Here’s what else is noteworthy.

  • Adjustable handlebar: It has a 3-position pivoting handlebar, which makes for a comfortable stroll for caregivers of different heights.

  • Easy one-handed fold: This stroller folds flat with the seat facing either direction (and if you’re using it as a travel system, you can just pop the car seat off the frame and leave the ring adapter in place). Just fold the seat over like a clamshell and grab the handle in the middle. It also stands on its own in the folded position, which is a convenient feature. Watch how this works at 2:32.

  • Plenty of storage: The storage basket is open and roomy for toting your diaper bag, with a small inside zippered pocket if you want to tuck something away. There’s also another zippered storage pocket on the seat back that can hold your keys and wallet (so you can leave your belt bag at home).

  • Included accessories: The SWIV comes out of the box with more accessories than most Nuna strollers. Besides the ring adapter, it also comes with a parent cup holder, rain cover and carry bag.

Who Do We Recommend the SWIV Stroller For?

At $900, the SWIV is a bit pricier than some of Nuna’s other strollers, but its one-of-a-kind all-wheel 360°-rotation makes it a lot easier for parents to navigate tight spaces with a stroller in tow. And if you think you’ll find yourself in those kind of spots on a regular basis, having the flexibility of two strolling modes can be very helpful.
