Video Review: We Tried the First-Ever Standalone Bouncer and Swing Combo

Life with an infant comes with a few guarantees: they’ll love being held, and sometimes, you’ll need a safe, comfy place to set them down so you can have arms free for a minute. That’s where repetitive motion can help, because it mimics the sensation of being held, bounced and rocked by you—and the sensory input and movement of an infant swing or bouncer replicates just that. The new Stokke Yoga combines the benefits of both swinging and bouncing into just one piece of gear; something we haven’t seen before now.

In the video above, watch Cyndi, a mom of one, share all about this two-in-one swing and bouncer, and below, learn more about the Stokke Yoga before adding it to your Babylist registry

Why swinging and bouncing help soothe baby

Different movements have different benefits for babies. When your baby is in a bouncer, they learn to bounce themselves up and down by kicking their legs (see this motion in our video at 1:25). The bouncing motion keeps baby engaged while also helping them develop motor skills. As they grow, they’ll learn to initiate stronger movement on their own by kicking and wiggling more and more, encouraging independent play. When your baby is in a swing, the consistent, soothing side-to-side motion (:59) can be calming, especially if they’re fussy. However, traditional swing options are often bulky, and need to be plugged in or use batteries.

The Stokke Yoga gives you the benefits of swinging and bouncing with one piece of gear. And your baby is in control here—they can bounce, rock and kick their little legs to create a gentle swaying motion, a bouncy rhythm or both at once. Unlike traditional bouncers that only bounce, the added swinging movement helps mimic the soothing feeling of being rocked in your arms. And, since some babies like different types of movement like the up and down motion of a bouncer or the swaying of a swing, this gives you both, without needing to choose.

What makes the Stokke Yoga stand out?

Here's what to know about the Stokke Yoga 2-in-1 Bouncer and Swing:

  • Parent or baby-powered motion: While all bouncers are parent or baby-powered, we haven’t yet seen a baby-powered swing—a motor usually powers them to maintain the constant rocking. A parent can either help the Stokke Yoga swing sway by gently pushing it with their hand, or the baby’s movement combined with their weight helps create a side-to-side swinging sensation, kind of like a glider you’d find on a porch. There’s no motor in the Yoga, which means no cords, plugs or batteries.

  • Created with expert input: Stokke developed the Yoga with the help of physiotherapists, aka experts in body movement and mobility. Yoga’s natural dual movement, battery-free design encourages motor skill development—and a supportive newborn cushion keeps even the smallest babies comfortable and safe. It's important to ensure that a newborn doesn't lean too far forward or backward since they can’t yet hold their head up, and the newborn cushion provides support for baby’s head and back.

  • Three recline positions: This 2-in-1 bouncer/swing adjusts to support your baby through their earliest developmental stages (2:13). A five-point harness keeps baby supported at the hips and shoulders, and there’s a quick-release button for easily taking baby out.

  • When your baby is a newborn, it’s recommended to set the Yoga to the lowest recline position since this is the position closest to lying flat. (Remember: bouncers and swings are for bouncing and swinging, not for sleeping).

  • As your baby grows, move the Yoga to the middle position to help them interact with their surroundings.

  • Elevate it into the upper position around six months to encourage kicking and playing.

  • High-quality materials: Not only is the mesh on the Stokke Yoga soft and comfy, it’s also breathable and will release heat to keep your baby cool and cozy during their leisure time (2:42). Also, the removable cover has every new parent’s favorite feature: machine-washable fabric, in the unpleasant event of a blowout.

  • Parent-friendly design: “Assembly required” has never been easier: simply snap the Stokke Yoga into its base and adjust it to your baby’s best position (1:59). It’s lightweight at 9.4 pounds, so it’s easy to move from room to room, and when the time comes to stow the Stokke Yoga, it easily disassembles into two parts and stores flat (3:21).

Who we recommend the Stokke Yoga for

Any parent who loves to hold their baby but would also like the freedom to move about hands-free so they can prepare a meal or use the bathroom might enjoy the Stokke Yoga. Folks deciding between a bouncer and a swing can appreciate the Yoga’s combined design, and those looking for ways to save some space (and money) will be stoked that they won’t need to buy two different pieces of gear.

Oh, and one more note on portability: it’s easy to assemble, disassemble, move and store flat, making it a solid choice for parents who may need to bring their Yoga into another room—or all the way to grandma’s house. With its soft fabrics, removable newborn cushion and adjustable recline positions (that grow with your baby up to 20 pounds), the 2-in-1 bouncing and swaying of the Stokke Yoga can be one more powerful tool in your parenting toolbox.
