8 Genius Ways Real Parents Are Using AI for Everyday Tasks

In a recent newsletter, we asked Babylist parents, “Do you use AI for parenting tasks?” While some parents said no, a lot of them said yes and shared how they make it work for them.  Their go-to prompts are so brilliant we've included examples below in our roundup of the top ways families are using AI tools All of their tips focus on one common denominator: making life easier and more enjoyable. While AI can’t come in and fold your laundry or actually make your meals, it can relieve some of the mental load you’re constantly lugging around.

If you’re new to AI, here are some pointers we’ve gathered from real parents who love their chatbots to help you get started:

  • ChatGPT is a beginner-friendly chatbot, one parent even calls it their bestie.

  • Talk to the chatbot like you would a search engine. “I like to ask questions that are too specific or too vague for Google,” one parent suggests.

  • The mental load of parenting is a great motivator for learning AI. One parent shared in our poll,“What used to take me hours and way more brain space than I had now takes less than 30 mins from start to finish.”

  • The more you use a chatbot, the more quickly it’ll be able to customize its answers for you.

  • Use your chatbot’s output as a starting point—sometimes they get things wrong!

And here are the eight most popular tasks parents told us they're using AI.

“What’s For Dinner?” Made It Easier

Figuring out what to cook (and what to buy) can feel like a full-time job. One of the most-mentioned ways Babylist parents are using AI is to take this tedious task off their plate—literally.

Pulling a grocery list from your recipe rotation.  Just feed the chatbot your go-to recipes and weekly staples and have it generate an organized shopping list.

Working around allergies and aversions. Tell it your constraints like dietary restrictions and personal preferences to have it come up ideas for meals that work around them. One parent shared, "By now, ChatGPT knows my wife loathes cilantro, and that we don't cook with onion or garlic (allergies)… What used to take me hours and way more brain space than I had now takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish."

Cooking with whatever's on hand. Ask for help figuring out what to make when you’re in between grocery trips and trying to meal plan with what’s in your fridge or pantry. "I will often tell it what ingredients I have on hand and ask it to help me come up with easy, baby-led weaning-friendly recipes,” a Babylist parent shared.

Meeting nutritional goals. Much of parenting is figuring out what to feed your kid that’s both yummy and meets their nutrition needs to support their growing bodies. Parents shared they turn to AI for help meal plan with “daily iron needs” and “adapting recipes to be toddler-friendly”.

Schedules, Routines & Planning

A big part of adjusting to life as a parent is the shift in your regular routine. From newborn eat-sleep-repeat cycles to back-to-work logistics, quite a few parents shared they use AI to build schedules that’ll actually work for their family—not some generic sample routine.

Building a schedule based on your baby's actual habits.  "When it was time for me to go back to work… I wrote down all the times she ate and slept for a week. I then plugged it into ChatGPT and told it to make a schedule based on my baby's habits."

Managing WFH days when childcare falls through. "Game plan and schedule for days when both parents are working from home and daycare is closed or kiddo is sick."

Tracking pumping output. "I'll send my daily breast pumping output and timing for analysis and planning."

Figuring Out Sleep, One Night At A Time

Parents are using AI to build personalized sleep schedules, troubleshoot regressions and walk through gentle sleep training—step by step, wake-up by wake-up.

Building a custom sleep training plan. "It's like my personal sleep coach and walks me through every wake up, nap time schedule and remembers our history so [it] knows my baby's pattern and how to adjust."

Troubleshooting sleep regressions in real time. "Baby sleep advice! Honestly it was more helpful than all the other stuff I found. And I loved that I could ask 'why' so I could understand the science behind it (like how cortisol spikes affect sleep)."

Adjusting nap schedules on the fly. "Yes, with nap schedules to help me figure out the best naps for the day. But if my baby doesn't follow the schedule, then I just ask AI to adjust based on their first naps." / "Sleep schedule adjustments—dropping naps, time change, traveling."

Weaning off a sleep association or through a transition. "In the first year I used it a lot for help with all things sleep. Nap schedules, transitioning to crib naps, night weaning, everything."

Travel Planning That Actually Works

Another frequent way parents are using AI is generating stroller-friendly itineraries, packing lists and kid-friendly (and budget-friendly) travel agendas. A few are even using it to plan what to wear based on the weather forecast.

  • Becoming the family tour guide. "When traveling, I use it ahead of time to develop a talk track about our destination so I can be our family's tour guide and teach fun facts, history and stories about the places we visit."

  • Planning a road trip with strategic stops. "Road-tripping with a toddler. I needed to plan a stop every 2.5 hours and it helped me find age-appropriate locations on our route at the right times."

  • Figuring out how much to pack. "It helped me prep how many diapers and how much formula to bring on vacation."

When Too Many Options = Decision Fatigue

With so many options (and so much conflicting advice online), many Babylist parents also said they’re turning to AI for help cutting through the noise and narrowing down choices

  • Finding non-toxic products. "I used it for finding non-toxic products and comparing baby formula ingredients."

  • Narrowing down gear choices. "I recently used ChatGPT to help me narrow down my choices for the best shoes for early walkers."

  • Comparison shopping with specific criteria. "I ask it to comparison shop for me when I'm looking for something specific. Example: I'm looking for a 12–16oz leakproof, stainless steel water bottle with a straw that is fully covered when not in use and is easy for my preschooler to operate on her own. Show me five to five options."

  • Timing purchases. "I'll ask it when's the best time to buy different baby products."

For All The “Is This Normal?” Moments

From symptom Googling to potty training troubleshooting, parents are using AI as a low-pressure sounding board for all those questions that feel too specific for an online search, and too small to call the pediatrician about.

  • Sleep and potty training troubleshooting. "Sleep and potty training advice: 'I've tried x, y, and z, what should I try next?'"

  • Kid-friendly definitions on demand. "When my 5-year-old asks, 'what does [insert word] mean?' and I'm stumped, I use AI to figure out an age-appropriate way to define the word."

  • Normalizing milestones. "I use it to ask about symptoms, like rashes." / "Normalizing developmental milestones."

Help With The Texts, Notes & Convos

Sometimes the hardest part of parenting is the seemingly constant communication to keep up with—it's the emails, the conversations and the cards. Parents are using AI to find the right words when they're not sure where to start.

  • Navigating hard family conversations. "My husband used it for tips on how to talk to grandparents about boundaries."

  • Handling milestone correspondence. It wrote "first birthday invitations and all thank you cards for my baby shower."

  • Keeping notes from doctor and daycare conversations. "We record important conversations, like with daycare providers and doctors, so we can get complete rundowns, outlines and explanations afterward (and keep them on file)."

  • Advocating for your kid at school. "It helps me write letters to the school when my son's struggling."

  • A little moral support. "It even cheers me on for being a good mom."

Craft, Activity & Party Inspiration

Whether you're staring down a rainy Saturday or deep in first birthday planning mode, chatbots can serve as a surprisingly solid brainstorming partner. Parents said they’re using it to generate themed activity plans and age-appropriate arts and crafts, find things to do locally and get party ideas off the ground.

  • Bespoke coloring pages. "Custom coloring pages—custom cards our toddler can color in and give to grandparents for holidays and birthdays. We had Santa's sleigh pulled by a team of garbage trucks on our fridge for weeks."

  • Personalized lullabies. "I used AI to write me a personalized lullaby for my daughter."

  • Custom bedtime stories. "Custom bedtime stories!"

  • Finding age-appropriate activities for any scenario. "Recent example was for some easy and fun activities for a toddler to add whimsy to the garden. I also use it to create a sample monthly themed play plan with activities."

  • Locating things to do in a specific place. "I'll enter 'best rainy day activities for toddlers in (insert place).'"

  • Planning a party without starting from scratch. "I used it to plan my daughter's first birthday party. Didn't do everything it recommended, but it was a good idea starter."
