5 Things to Know About the See Pro 360° Monitor

One of the earliest ways babies learn to communicate is by crying. But like learning any foreign language, it can take some time for you to figure out how to translate those cries into something you understand. The See Pro 360° baby monitor from Maxi-Cosi is the first-ever baby monitor to listen for and decode your baby’s cries to help you figure out what they need faster—especially in those early days when they need a lot and those needs are constantly changing (hungry, gassy, tired—rinse and repeat).

We sent the See Pro 360° to Bailey, a real Babylist parent, to test out with her four-month-old. Watch the video above to see how it works in real life, or keep reading for what you should know before buying this monitor or adding one to your Babylist.

What is CryAssist?

To a non-parent, different cries might all sound the same. But over time, you learn how to listen for a specific tone that says, “I’m hungry,” or “I’m gassy” or “I am not happy about how cold baby wipes are.” That doesn’t happen overnight, though. So CryAssist is like Google Translate, but for parents. It uses sound analysis based on over a million hours of testing with real newborns and AI technology (powered by a company called Zoundream) to analyze, translate and help understand your baby’s cries so you can respond to their needs more confidently.

How the See Pro 360° Works

The See Pro 360° is trained to only listen for your baby’s cries. So let’s say you’re watching your favorite medical show and someone on screen came into the ER screaming—this monitor knows that’s not your baby. The See Pro 360° can tell the difference between a cry and a conversation, and it filters out any irrelevant background noise, standing by until your baby is upset. Once it recognizes a cry, it gets to work decoding that cry for five different things:

  • Hungry
  • Gassy
  • Fussy
  • Sleepy
  • or Agitated

A notification will pop up on the parent unit as you can see at the 01:36 mark in our video. But for a deeper dive into your baby’s emotional state, you can connect your monitor to the Maxi-Cosi Connected Family app, and there you’ll get your notifications on what your baby’s cry means, along with extra info about what they might need or how to help soothe them. You can also use the app as a daily diary for your baby, tracking things like feeding sessions and sleep—so everything is connected in one spot.

How the See Pro 360° is Different from Other Smart Monitors

Smart baby monitors have been around for a few years now. You may have seen ones with technology that tracks your baby’s vitals and sends an alert if their stats fall outside of a pre-approved range. While that can be helpful to some parents, it can also introduce additional anxieties for others.

Rather than simply telling you something is wrong, the See Pro 360° can help alleviate some anxiety by telling you what is upsetting your baby and then tips as to what you can do about it. You can also give it feedback, like whether the guidance was helpful or not, which helps improve the Zoundream algorithm (which can lead to more accuracy in cry translations).

Another thing that sets the See Pro 360° apart from other baby monitors is that everything happens in the monitor itself. You don’t need to add a wearable device or special clothing for the See Pro 360° to detect and decipher baby’s cries.

How Does the Camera Stack Up?

Despite what people might tell you there will be plenty of time when your baby isn’t crying. So while the CryAssist feature is definitely the MVP of this monitor, the See Pro 360° is still a video monitor that you’ll use to check in on your baby when they aren’t upset (like, hopefully sleeping).

Like many video monitors, this streams 2K ultra-HD video and has built-in lullabies and white noise, so you can skip the separate sound machine. And two-way audio let’s you talk to your baby when you want to soothe them with your voice. But there are a couple of things about the See Pro 360 that set it apart as a standalone video monitor:

  • Split-screen streaming: Most baby monitors only let you view one room at a time . But as your little one gets older, you might want to keep an eye on them in their playroom or even have two babies in separate nurseries to check in on. So with this monitor, you can view two rooms at the same time (this is a feature some standard video monitors offer, but it’s pretty uncommon in smart baby monitors).

  • Digital memory book: There are several different ways to save your baby’s videos for the memory book: either on the cloud or on physical storage like a micro SD card. Lastly, the camera has a sensor that tracks your baby’s room temperature and humidity levels so you can make sure your baby has the optimal sleep environment.

Safety & Encryption

As I mentioned above, this monitor comes with its own parent unit, which many parents say they appreciate since WiFi isn’t always reliable (and sometimes you just want to put your phone down).

There are a bunch of safety and encryption features baked into this monitor:

  • Selective hearing: The See Pro 360° only listens for cries, not conversations.
  • Anonymous listening: All of your baby’s cries are encrypted and analyzed anonymously, so outside of your personal devices, there’s no digital trail connecting your baby’s cries to them.

Does it actually work?

The thing with smart baby gear is…it’s only smart if it actually works. So we asked Bailey to test the See Pro 360° during her baby’s four-month sleep regression. You can see at the 4:49 mark just how quickly the monitor responded to her baby’s cries (and spoiler alert: it was correct).

Who Is This Monitor a Good Fit For?

Most parents will learn the secret language of their baby’s cries eventually—but how long it takes can vary from person to person. For some people not familiar with what their baby needs, it can add extra stress to a sometimes already overwhelming time. While nothing replaces your instincts when it comes to your baby, the See Pro 360° is like having a pocket baby decoder at your side to help. Watch our complete video review to see it in action.
