From Wilder to Sunny: Why Nature Baby Names Feel Brand New This Year
From Wilder to Sunny: Why Nature Baby Names Feel Brand New This Year

Nature-inspired names have been a hot genre of baby names parents have been drawn to for at least a decade. It’s one of the most persistent trends we’ve seen on Babylist Babes (where real Babylist parents share their baby’s name and birth date) and in our most recent deep dive, we’re seeing a shift in the kinds of nature names parents are gravitating toward.

Where Olive, Asher and Luna were once the faves—and you might not even notice they actually are nature-esque at first glance—we’re seeing a new vibe of nature-inspired names.  Parents are also heavily leaning into nature for middle-name inspiration, where they tend to feel more comfortable breaking from convention.

Below, we’ve rounded up the nature names Babylist parents are loving right now—plus a few standout picks to spark inspiration as you build your list. And if you're deep in baby name research mode, try out our Baby Name Generator and let us do the work for you!

Up and Coming Nature Names

We’ll start off with a few unique names we’ve noticed surfacing more and more. While they’re not “new”, they strike a nice balance between being familiar yet uncommon—perfect for parents who like nature-inspired names but don’t want to go with something too popular.

  • Sunny: Sunny (and the alternative spelling with an O, usually for boys) has been showing up more frequently over the last few months. It's emerging as a fresh, optimistic  pick that feels light, playful and modern—very much on our radar. It’s often paired with more formal, vintage middle names (think Sunny Elizabeth or Sunny Celeste).

  • Fox: This is a bold, animal-inspired, statement-making name that’s been popping up in baby name announcements and on the Babylist Babes list

  • Ember: Sitting right on the edge between emerging and established, Ember continues to gain traction as a nature-focused alternative to Emery or Everly. It blends warmth and strength (hello, fire), making it one of the more wearable next-wave nature names.

Grounded Evergreen Names

Tree- and forest-inspired names are modern nature name staples; they’re familiar, grounded and effortlessly cool. Hazel, Rowan, Willow and Juniper are longtime favorites that continue to anchor this category, proving their staying power year after year.

Alongside them, names like Aspen and Olive are coming back to offer a slightly fresher take on the trend, while Cedar, Forrest and Elowen (a Cornish gem meaning “elm tree”) are more unexpected—natural, earthy and just tame enough to feel distinctive without feeling out there.

Names like Dahlia, Briar and Marigold aren’t everywhere yet, but they’re quietly climbing the ranks—perfect for parents who want something familiar but not overused.

Nature-Inspired Middle Names

If you’re not sure about choosing something more unique for your baby’s first name, try it for baby’s middle name. We've noticed that Babylist parents often use the middle spot to have more fun; some are choosing names that add a touch of the outdoors without committing to a big statement.

Here are a few new and well-loved nature-inspired names Babylist parents are choosing for middle name pairings:
