3 Easy Hacks to Help Save Money on Baby Gear

Even with a really big or really generous family or friend group, you won’t always get everything you registered for before the baby comes. And if you do, the gear needs don’t necessarily stop there. (Growth spurts happen!) But baby timelines don’t always match up with the realities of your budget. So if you’re looking to get a little more bang for your buck, here are three easy hacks that can help you do that.

Use Your 15% Discount

If you haven’t already used it, now is the time to take advantage of your 15% registry discount—a one-time perk that kicks in two months before your baby’s estimated arrival date to help you get the gear you might still need.

Since your 15% discount can only be used once, it’s best to wait until you have big ticket items to buy or a full cart to get the most out of this perk (don’t worry, you have six months to do that). Just remember that the Babylist discount can only be used on items in the Babylist store. If you click on the 15% discount announcement in the upper left corner of your registry, it’ll show you which products are eligible.

Nest Now, Pay Later

Sometimes you just need a little cushion for those need-it-now big ticket purchases, like car seats and cribs. Which is where newer payment options like Afterpay can come in handy (we just added it to the Babylist Shop). Afterpay lets you split purchases from $1 to $2,000 into smaller amounts and pay them back over time without any interest or external credit checks.* With that option, a $200 stroller gets broken down into more manageable $50 payments. As long as you pay it back on time there are no extra fees, so while you aren’t necessarily saving money in the end, it’s like a free temporary budgeting hack.

If you’ve never used a payment option like Afterpay before, the checkout process isn’t much different from checking out with any other online payment service (think: PayPal). You choose Afterpay as your payment option, and then create an account with them. The difference is that once your purchase is approved, it’ll automatically be split into four payments—with the first payment due at checkout and the rest automatically applied every two weeks after that.

Bonus tip: you can stack this hack with a discount code (like your 15% registry discount) to reduce your payments even more.

Shop Seasonally

Unless your kid goes through a rapid growth spurt, most gear purchases won’t need to happen right now. If you can hold out for a major holiday like Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day or the Internet’s favorite holiday—Prime Day—you can save 20% to 40% (sometimes more) on big ticket gear. It’s helpful to keep your options open, though, since there’s no way of knowing what’ll be discounted, and be prepared with backup choices in case your first pick isn’t on sale.

Pro tip: if you’re shopping on Babylist, you can combine all three options—sale pricing, Afterpay and your registry discount to get the most out of your purchase.

It isn’t always easy to know which baby gear items you’re going to be gifted and which ones you’ll have to cover yourself (or how soon you may need to upgrade after the baby comes). But if you time it right and stack your registry perks, you’d be surprised how big of a dent you can make in that bill.
