In This Article
If you’re someone who values products made from natural, eco-friendly or organic materials, or if you prioritize GREENGUARD Gold Certified products in your home, you’ll likely want to continue that trend after you become a parent. Luckily, the baby market is on your side—there are tons of green baby items to choose from when you’re building your registry.
According to our newsletter polling, the eco-friendly products that Babylist parents are most interested in are cloth diapers, glass bottles and natural fibers like organic cotton and sustainable wood. So we’ve gathered this sample registry to feature parent-favorite green baby gear choices, from diapering to nursery furniture.
Worried that “eco-friendly” and “sustainable” come with a higher price tag? We’ve got you there, too; this list includes a range of price points so you can build your registry on a budget if you need, or pull off a minimalist mentality when it comes to baby’s necessities.
(Need help narrowing down what else to put on your registry? The Babylist baby registry checklist lets you see what are must-have baby products and what’s nice to have in a variety of baby gear categories.)

How to think about “green” when building your registry
Going green with your baby registry doesn’t mean you need to overhaul everything or spend a ton of extra money. For most parents, it’s about making more mindful choices in a few key areas. Whether you’re going all-in on sustainability or just dipping a toe, here are a few suggestions to help guide your picks.
Start with sustainable materials
“Organic” isn’t a regulated term in manufacturing, but there are certain materials that are naturally more sustainable and eco-friendly than others. Look for items made from cotton, linen, wool, rubber, certain woods (beech, bamboo, oak and maple are just a few), stainless steel or glass. These tend to have a lower environmental impact than plastics or synthetic materials, and they’re often gentler on your baby’s skin too.
Natural & Sustainable Materials You'll See in Baby Products
| Material | Why It's Great | An Alternative To | Common Baby Products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton (Organic) | Breathable, soft and hypoallergenic—gentle on baby's skin | Traditionally grown cotton (which may use pesticides) and synthetic fabrics like polyester | Clothing, swaddles, burp cloths, crib sheets, washcloths |
| Linen | Naturally moisture-wicking, softens with each wash and highly durable | Synthetic fabrics like polyester | Baby carriers, nursing covers, clothing |
| Wool | Helps regulate temperature, naturally flame-resistant and moisture-wicking | Synthetic fleece or acrylic | Sleep sacks, clothing, stuffed toys, nursery decor |
| Natural Rubber | Non-toxic, biodegradable and free from BPA, PVC and phthalates | Plastic teethers and toys | Teethers, pacifiers |
| Sustainable Woods (Beech, Bamboo, Oak, Maple) |
Durable, naturally antimicrobial and renewable when responsibly sourced | Plastic furniture and toys | Cribs, high chairs, play gyms, teethers, blocks, rattles |
| Glass | Chemical-free, doesn't retain odors or stains, dishwasher safe and fully recyclable | Plastic bottles and dishes | Baby bottles, food containers, dishes |
| Stainless Steel | Non-toxic, won't leach chemicals, dishwasher safe and built to last | Plastic bottles and dishes | Baby bottles, sippy cups, food containers, utensils |
Check for certifications
Some baby products come with third-party certifications that back up their sustainability and eco-friendliness claims, a few major ones being:
GOTS-certified organic: for clothing, bedding and other fabric soft goods like swaddles and sleep sacks
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: also for clothing and similar textiles
GREENGUARD Gold: for furniture, including crib mattresses
Flame Retardant Free (not an official certification, but listed on labels): for car seats, clothing and furniture
Consider durability
One of the most sustainable things you can do: choose gear that lasts. That could mean convertible items that grow with your little one through multiple stages and years, or products you can pass along to a friend or future sibling. If it’s durable enough to stand up to everyday use and hold its resale value (think: wooden toys, stainless steel meal sets and glass bottles), that’s a win for sustainable use.
Don’t sleep on secondhand
There’s no rule that everything on your registry has to be new. In fact, a Babylist registry lets you include room for secondhand finds—especially clothing, toys and bigger gear items like bassinets or bouncers that are only used for a short time.
