Best Backpack Diaper Bags of 2024

When you’re out with your little one, you have your hands full. Which is exactly why a diaper backpack is so appealing—it holds all of your things and leaves your hands free to hold your baby, push your stroller or pick up your toddler’s favorite toy that’s just fallen on the ground for the sixth time.

Backpack-style diaper bags offer all the space (and the hands-free convenience) a regular backpack provides but are equipped with built-in baby must-haves like tons of storage pockets, insulated bottle holders, a wipes holder and a changing pad. Just like traditional diaper bags, backpack styles are available in a huge range of designs and budgets, so it’s easy to find one that’s right for you.

Best Convertible Backpack Diaper Bag

Designed by moms, this sleek, modern and 100% wipeable and spill-resistant diaper bag goes from daycare to dinner, no problem. Classy good looks on the outside (thanks, vegan leather), it’s all business on the inside with 10 pockets, including mesh pockets, an insulated pocket and even a roomy compartment with a magnetic closure. You can wear the bag three different ways: as a backpack, a crossbody or a purse.

Best On-Trend Backpack Diaper Bag

This on-trend yet no-nonsense diaper backpack gets the job done in a big way. The Forma has plenty of room for all of your baby’s (and your) gear. The main compartment has an extra-wide opening so it’s easy to find your things. There’s also a front zip pocket for two storage cubes and lots of other pockets and compartments to stash your stuff. We also love the quilted material and of course the (beautiful) sage green color.

Beloved brand Skip Hop makes SO many other diaper bag backpacks we love. Check out the Mainframe for a more structured (but just as stylish) option, and the 6-Piece Suite for an all-in-one on-the-go solution.

Best Lightweight Backpack Diaper Bag

Every ounce counts when you’re toting your baby, a diaper bag and all of their stuff. There are plenty of pockets inside and out and along with padded straps, laptop and luggage sleeves, an insulated bottle compartment and a washable changing pad. How We Chose Our Best Backpack Diaper Bags

  • We analyzed results from Babylist’s Best Baby Products survey, which polled almost 3,000 Babylist users and asked them to share the baby products they love the most and why.
  • We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Gear Editor Jen LaBracio, an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products, including many backpack diaper bags.
  • We reviewed customer reviews from hundreds of real Babylist parents.

What to Look for in a Backpack Diaper Bag

Lots of parents choose a backpack diaper bag based on looks alone—and most of the time, that’s totally fine. There are a few other features you’ll want to consider, though.

Fit and Comfort

How big is the backpack? Does its shape and size fit your body size comfortably? Would it work for other caregivers as well? Look for a backpack diaper bag with wide straps that will distribute weight evenly. (Padded ones are a bonus!) A padded back panel will also help the backpack feel more comfortable, especially if you’re wearing it for a longer period of time.

Storage

The primary reason you’ll be using a backpack diaper bag is so you can haul around all of your stuff, so you need to be sure the bag you choose is right for your needs. That doesn’t mean your diaper backpack has to be enormous—it just means it has to be able to hold what YOU need it to hold.

For most parents, pockets are critical. Look for a big, roomy main compartment with plenty of smaller pockets suitable for stashing all your baby basics like bottles, clothes, toys and diapers, of course. A few easy-to-reach exterior pockets on the outside are also a nice plus, with one dedicated to parent gear like your keys and phone. Other nice-to-haves include a spot for a water bottle and some sort of wipes holder, as well as insulated bottle pockets.

One more thing to consider: a structured versus a non-structured bag. A structured bag will remain upright when placed on a flat surface, whereas a non-structured one may fall over or even collapse in on itself. Structured bags also tend to be heavier than non-structured ones. Neither is a right or wrong pick; it’s more about figuring out what you prefer.

Material

Diaper bag backpacks come in all different types of material including nylon, canvas, leather, vegan leather, neoprene and more. The type of material may affect the bag’s weight and how durable it is. It’s also a factor during a mess (and trust us, there will be messes). Think through if you want a diaper bag backpack that’s spot clean, wipe clean or even fully machine washable. Also pay attention to the inner lining of the bag, too. Is it waterproof for easy cleanup?

Extras

Stroller straps or clips let you attach your diaper bag backpack to your stroller. Convertible straps turn some bags into crossbody or shoulder bags. A removable diaper caddy or changing station can be extra convenient when you’re on the go. Think through any special features you may want in your backpack diaper bag before making your decision.
