The Baby Gear Worth Buying for the Long Haul (and What to Skip)
Multi-stage baby gear promises years of use, but not all of it delivers. Here’s what’s worth buying and why—or why not.

In This Article
Grow-with-me gear—products designed to adapt alongside your child, often from the baby days through the big-kid years—sounds smart, and sometimes it is. It can be a great solution if you live in a small space, lean minimalist or eco-conscious, or are just trying to cut down on the amount of stuff you’re buying and adding to your registry. As Babylist’s senior gear editor for the last six years (and a mom of two kids myself), I’ve watched multifunctionality evolve from a trend into something many new and expecting parents actively look for, and even prioritize, when shopping for baby gear.
But longevity alone doesn’t guarantee value, fit or function. Some all-in-one products sound great in theory but don’t actually deliver in real life. And it can be tough to sort out what’s truly worth the investment from what’s mostly clever marketing.
In this guide, I’m breaking down which categories of grow-with-me gear actually live up to the promise—along with the specific products in each category I think are worth the investment—and which ones you can feel good about skipping.
✅ Generally Worth It (For Most Families)
Convertible High Chairs
A convertible high chair grows along with your child, supporting them from the early months of starting solids through the big-kid years and beyond. (Some even turn into adult chairs!)
Are Convertible High Chairs Worth It?
- Baby to big-kid use (and beyond)
- Adjustable seat + footrest
- Supports all stages of eating
- Pulls up to the table
- • Higher upfront cost
- • Larger footprint (many models)
- • Most don't fold
- • Not compatible with every table
✅ The verdict: Yes.
While there are a few notable downsides (mostly cost and portability), the pros outweigh the cons here. Babies need ergonomic support during mealtime, but big kids do, too—most little ones can’t sit safely or comfortably in an adult chair until well into elementary school. Convertible high chairs are worth the long-term investment for most families.
The Best Convertible High Chair
Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair² - Natural
From $279.20The original convertible high chair, the Tripp Trapp made its debut in 1972 and has been going strong ever since. It truly delivers on its “chair for life” promise; with a few add-ons, it works from infancy through adulthood, supporting up to 300 pounds. You can use it with a newborn lounger, a baby seat + tray or pull it right up to the table for family meals, and it’s ergonomic in every mode—my four-year-old is just as comfortable in it as my almost 12-year-old is. And because it’s made from solid wood, it’s super easy to wipe clean.

Convertible Strollers
A convertible stroller adapts as your family grows, allowing you to add a second (and sometimes third) seat instead of buying an entirely new stroller.
Are Convertible Strollers Worth It?
- Grows with your family
- Holds 2–3 kids
- One stroller long-term
- Good for close-in-age siblings
- • Expensive
- • Big and heavy
- • Harder to steer fully loaded
✅ The verdict: Yes, but with a few caveats.
For the right families, convertible strollers can be a smart investment. If you’re planning on two kids close in age or know you’ll need multiple seats down the line, they’re often more affordable than buying a second full stroller later and will save you from extra gear (and extra decision fatigue). Although they’re larger and tougher to steer than single strollers, they’re a smart, strategic buy for most growing families.
The Best Convertible Stroller
UPPAbaby Vista V3 Stroller - Declan
From $999.99UPPAbaby put convertible strollers on the map, and the Vista is still my go-to for families who know they’ll need a stroller solution for two (or more) kids close in age. It’s packed with thoughtful features, from a telescoping handlebar and massive storage basket to a modular, all-seasons seat, and the suspension and maneuverability are unmatched. It’s also durable enough to withstand years of daily use with multiple kids. It works as a single, a double with a second seat, bassinet or car seat or a triple with a ride-along board.

Convertible Cribs
A convertible crib transitions from crib to toddler bed, and sometimes even to a full-size bed, using additional conversion pieces.
Are Convertible Cribs Worth It?
- Converts as your child grows
- Fewer furniture purchases
- Consistent sleep space
- • Higher upfront cost
- • Conversion kit often sold separately
- • Style may feel dated over time
- • Discontinued parts can complicate conversion
- • Won't last through big-kid years
✅ The verdict: Yes.
Since most families end up using a toddler bed anyway, a convertible crib is one of the most practical grow-with-me purchases. The price difference between a convertible and a non-convertible is often pretty modest, and keeping your little one in a familiar sleep space can make the crib-to-bed transition smoother. Just be sure to buy the conversion kit at the same time you buy your crib; otherwise, it may be discontinued. And keep in mind that if your crib starts out as a mini crib, you’ll need to purchase an additional mini crib-sized mattress.
The Best Convertible Crib
The Nestig crib is truly the only sleep space you’ll need for years. It transforms from a mini crib (on wheels, a super useful feature) to a full-size crib and eventually to a toddler bed. The conversion kit is included, so you’ll never have to worry about not having it when it’s time to make the switch. It’s made from solid Brazilian pine and is GREENGUARD Gold Certified. And it’s also really beautiful.

⚖️ It Depends
Baby Carriers
Multi-position baby carriers are designed to carry your child from day one through toddlerhood. They offer multiple carry positions, often including inward, outward and sometimes hip or back carry options.
Are Multiple-Position Baby Carriers Worth It?
- Newborn to toddler use
- Multiple carry positions
- Adjustable for different caregivers
- May replace multiple carriers
- • Expensive
- • Bulkier than wraps
- • Newborn insert often needed
- • Not all positions are ergonomic
- • Can feel complicated to adjust
☑️ The verdict: Sometimes worth it.
Multi-position baby carriers have many perks, mainly that they last for years and can usually accommodate caregivers of different sizes thanks to all the adjustment options. For many families, they’re a great choice. But these types of carriers often come with a learning curve and aren’t always ideal for tiny newborns. If you think you’ll be doing a lot of babywearing, especially in the early days, you might also want to invest in a stretchy wrap like the Solly or a structured carrier that’s easy to get on and specifically designed for the newborn days, like the Ergobaby Embrace.

Ergobaby Omni Deluxe Carrier - Natural Beige Mesh
From $219.00This baby carrier is incredibly soft, which immediately sets it apart from similar structured carriers and makes it especially lovely for the newborn stage. It’s also impressively supportive, with four carry positions and plenty of adjustment options, so it stays comfortable as your baby grows. I used it with my second baby and reached for it just as often in those early weeks as I did when he was a much heavier toddler.

Playards
Multifunction playards combine a bassinet, changing station and play space into one portable package.
Are Multifunction Playards Worth It?
- Sleep, change + play in one
- Can replace multiple baby items
- Great for small spaces + travel
- • Larger and heavier
- • More expensive
- • Some features are short-lived
☑️ The verdict: Often worth it, if you’ll use the features.
If you live in a small space or prioritize minimalism, a multifunction playard can replace multiple pieces of gear. (Win!) Having a safe sleep and changing spot in one space is genuinely convenient, especially in the early months. But keep in mind that many add-on features are short-lived, so if you don’t see yourself actually using things like a bassinet or a changer, a simpler (and less expensive) playard might be a better choice.
The Best Multifunction Playard
Graco Pack n' Play Close2Baby Seat Lux Playard - Soft Almond
From $199.99This playard is more than just nice to look at; it’s a true grow-with-me system. It includes add-ons you’ll actually use: a portable newborn seat, a wipeable changer, a full-size infant bassinet and a toddler play area with a zip-down door. It’s really well priced considering all the features. And while it’s not the lightest, it works for occasional travel, too. (If you travel regularly, I’d recommend a lighter multifunction playard like the Guava Lotus.)

Activity Centers
These activity centers adjust in height and often convert into a play table as your child grows.
Are Grow-With-Me Activity Centers Worth It?
- Converts to play table
- Longer use than single-stage models
- • Expensive for limited daily use
- • Table conversion often underwhelming
- • Large footprint
☑️ The verdict: Sometimes worth it, but definitely not a must-have.
While they offer a slightly longer use window than traditional models, grow-with-me activity centers aren’t a must-have for most families. The “big kid table” conversion often sounds more impressive than it is; it’s typically short-lived and not essential, especially since many families eventually buy a dedicated toddler table and chairs set anyway. If you love the idea, there’s nothing wrong with choosing one, but don’t feel like you’re missing out if you skip it.

Skip Hop 3-Stage Activity Center and Kid Chairs Bundle - Explore & More
From $194.98This activity center is a long-time parent favorite (I had a version of it when my first son was born over a decade ago) and the best grow-with-me option thanks to the adjustability, removable toys and table conversion feature. This bundle includes the chairs, but you can also buy the activity center separately if you prefer.

🚩 Not a Must for Most Families
All-in-One Car Seats
All-in-one car seats are designed to take your child from day one through booster age (about 10 years old) in a single seat.
Are All-in-One Car Seats Worth It?
- Infant to booster design
- Fewer seats to buy
- No extra seat to store
- Potentially less waste
- • Many kids outgrow before seatbelt readiness
- • Can create "last seat" false confidence
- • Bulky and heavy
- • Not ideal for small newborns
- • Locked into older safety tech
- • Not portable
⚠️ The verdict: Usually not the best long-term strategy.
The idea of one seat that covers a decade of car seat needs sounds appealing, but the reality is more nuanced. Many kids outgrow all-in-one seats before they’re truly ready to use the vehicle seatbelt alone. Most all-in-ones in booster mode are large and bulky, and don’t always provide a great fit. And speaking of fit, newborn fit is also an issue—most all-in-ones don’t fit newborns well at all, especially smaller babies. You’ll also lose the portable convenience of an infant seat.
For many families, using separate seats at different stages results in a better fit and similar overall cost, with more flexibility as safety technology evolves.
The Best All-in-One Car Seat
If you do want an all-in-one seat, the Exec Next is the best option. It’s expensive, but it’s one of only a few all-in-ones that truly delivers in all modes, including booster mode. The premium fabrics and construction mean it will stand up to years of use. Just note that it’s on the wider side when the cup holders are in use, and it doesn’t fit newborns very well.
