Best Baby Sandals and Summer Shoes

Headed to the beach? Or river or lake? These five sandals and water shoes will keep your babe’s tootsies covered and cute.Best Baby Sandals and Summer Shoes

During summer, feet get hot and sweaty and shoes get splashed. That’s true for toddlers too.

Now that your little one can walk, those chubby Flintstone feet don’t want to take a break. As tempting as it may be to let you child go barefoot, footwear protects their tootsies from the pain of stepping on rocks or something more dangerous.

Closed-toe sandals and shoes are your best bet during summer. They prevent sticks and sidewalk debris from getting in or under your child’s foot, and protect toes during inevitable stubs. A strap or closure in the back of the shoe will make sure it stays on your tot’s foot too.

Note: Foot experts recommend you avoid flip flops for the reasons noted above—zero protection against potential hazards and stubbing toes. Also, little toes have to work hard to grip flip flops to keep them on, which isn’t a natural motion for the foot. So flip flops can easily slip or fly off causing your child to fall.

The good news is there are so many footwear options that offer more support and safety than your average flip flop. It can be hard to know where to start so we’ve collected a group of fun, summery picks for you here.

Unstoppable Sandal

These ultra-durable sandals stand up to bouts of water play, mud, puddle jumping or whatever your kiddo can dish out. Keen sandals are machine washable and non-slip, and they feature a big rubber toe kick (no stubbing here!). Let your independent tot put these on “all-by-myself” with an easy hook-and-loop strap. The sandals also offer good arch support. For: Sizes 4-7

A Classic, Reborn

From the people who made baby moccasins a thing, this classic-looking sandal has a couple of really cool components: a water-resistant leather upper and a prong-free buckle that makes getting them on and off your child’s foot a cinch. The sandals have a durable rubber sole too. For: Sizes 3-13

The Pool Sandal

Your toddler’s feet will never be crammed when sporting a pair of classic clogs. The wide toe-bed is comfy, and the sole offers arch support and cushioning. Originally created as a boating shoe—these clogs are waterproof and have non-slip tread—Crocs are a great alternative to flip flops. They easily slip on and off at the pool or beach. They come in a variety of colors for boys and girls. For: Sizes 4-13

Water Ready

These water shoes keep tender feet protected from rough surfaces (think: river, lake and ocean beds and those pebbly shores) and provide traction on slippery surfaces too. The material dries quickly, and it’s super flexible, so getting them on and off is a breeze. Because these water shoes squish down pretty flat, you can throw them in the diaper bag for outdoor excursions. For: Sizes 4-9

Toms for Tots

Chances are you, your sister or someone you know loves their Toms. And your kiddo will too. These canvas sandals are vegan, with a comfy footbed. The ankle strap has a full return hook and loop backstrap with a Velcro closure for easy on and off. And like all Toms, they give a new pair of shoes to a child in need with every shoe purchased. For: Sizes 4-11

Baby Birks

Modeled after the classic cork-style Birkenstocks parents wear, this todder version is made of ultra lightweight and flexible EVA. Not only does this make these sandals comfy, it also reduces the stink factor and makes them waterproof. Three adjustable straps help you get the right fit. For: Sizes 1.5-13.5
