What to Pack in a Diaper Bag: A First-Time Parent’s Guide

Becoming a parent means suddenly carrying all the things, everywhere you go. A well-stocked diaper bag is your secret weapon, ready to handle everything from blowouts to snack emergencies.

After six years and two kids, I’ve packed a lot of diaper bags. I’ve watched all the videos, overpacked, underpacked—you name it. I’m also Babylist’s associate editor, where I’ve been immersed in the world of baby gear for the last five years.

Here’s my take on what actually needs to be in there, plus how to keep it organized so you can grab what you need when you need it.

✓ Diapers

A good rule when packing for newborns is to have one diaper for every two hours you’ll be out—plus a backup. I always felt “safest” with at least 5-6 in my diaper bag at all times. By three to six months, you can plan on one every three to four hours, and by six months and up, it’s about every four to six hours.

✓ Wipes

These aren’t just for diaper changes—they’re also lifesavers for sticky hands, messy faces and even wiping down restaurant tables. You don’t need to lug your big, bulky pack around though. Many brands offer travel-size packs that fit perfectly in diaper bags. Or you can transfer a few wipes from your main pack at home into a travel-ready pouch or container. Here are a few ideas:

✓ Portable Changing Mat

Not every restroom has a changing table, and some surfaces aren’t exactly baby-friendly, so a portable changing mat can make all the difference. Many diaper bags include a thin, portable changing mat. But if yours doesn’t or you want something a bit more substantial, here are a few options we like:

✓ Diaper Cream

It’s a good idea to pack a diaper cream to help prevent or soothe diaper rash. Some parents prefer a spray-on ointment for easy application, while others like a thicker cream that creates a stronger barrier. Pro tip: travel size tubes or jars are perfect for packing in your diaper bag.

✓ Hand Sanitizer + Poop Bags

A travel-size hand sanitizer is a must for quick clean-ups when soap and water aren’t available. And don’t forget a roll of disposable bags—they’re great for dirty diapers, messy clothes or anything else you don’t want floating around your bag.

✓ Extra Outfit (or Two) in a Wet Bag

Blowouts and spills happen, so it’s smart to keep at least one backup outfit in your bag. Packing it in a wet/dry bag makes it easy to separate dirty clothes from everything else. (And make sure you periodically check to make sure you have baby’s current size—they grow fast!)

✓ Feeding Essentials

What you need to bring in your diaper bag depends on how you’re feeding your baby.

If you’re bottle-feeding, bring bottles along with formula or pumped milk in a cooler bag. If your baby prefers warm milk, a portable bottle warmer can be a lifesaver.

If you’re breastfeeding, you might want a nursing cover (this is purely personal preference), an extra pair of nursing pads and maybe a travel nipple cream (the one below comes in a tube so you won’t need to use your fingers).

✓ Burb Cloths and Bibs

Burp cloths and bibs are small but mighty additions to your diaper bag. They’re handy for spit-up, dribbles and keeping outfits a little cleaner for a little longer. Toss a couple of each in your bag so you’re covered.

✓ Pacifier + Case

If your baby takes a pacifier, pack at least two. They always seem to disappear when you need them most, and a clip or case can help keep them cleaner and easier to find. Also consider a pacifier clip to keep it from falling on the floor.

✓ Blanket

A lightweight muslin swaddle blanket is one of the most versatile things you can pack. It works as a stroller blanket, a nursing cover, a burp cloth or even a play mat in a pinch—and it folds up small enough not to take over your bag.

✨ Extras

A small toy or teether can help keep your baby entertained on the go. It’s also handy to tuck in a mini first-aid kit with basics like bandages, baby nail clippers, and a thermometer so you’re prepared for little surprises.

💡For You

Don’t forget the essentials for yourself, too! Keep your wallet, keys and phone within easy reach, along with a refillable water bottle. A few small extras (like lip balm, sunscreen and sunglasses) can make outings a lot more comfortable.

Tips to Stay Organized

The specifics to pack in your diaper bag will look different based on your own individual needs. But keeping your bag neat makes life so much easier. Here are a few simple tricks:

  • Use your diaper bag’s built-in pockets so every item has its place

  • Pack smaller items in pouches—diapers in one, snacks in another

  •  Keep spare clothes in a wet bag to separate them from everything else

  • Restock wipes, diapers, and snacks after each outing so you’re always ready

  • Keep your phone, wallet and keys in a quick-grab spot

  • Periodically swap out clothes or gear your baby has outgrown so you’re not hauling extras

  • Do a quick bag check before leaving the house (it saves headaches later!)
