Best Play Food Sets for Toddlers & Kids

Is your toddler obsessed with food? Or are you just trying to find a fun and inviting way to introduce a few varied vegetables to your chicken-nuggets-only eater? Whatever your kiddo’s relationship with food is, play food is always an exciting addition to pretend play, whether it’s dinner parties with stuffed animals or a play kitchen cooking show with preschool friends.

To get those yummy (pretend) meals cookin’, here are our favorite play food sets:

A Full Pantry

No kitchen is complete without food to fill the cupboards. Here’s every food group you could possibly think of, including the most important one: dessert. Infinite meal and snack opportunities abound with this complete set. And at under $20, it’s a real bargain. Each piece is made of BPA-free plastic, so it’s nontoxic and durable.

Includes 115 pieces, including fruits, vegetables, boxed and canned goods, drinks, desserts and more

Sturdy, Natural Wood

Parents and children alike love Hape for their sturdy, aesthetically pleasing wooden toys, and their food sets are no exception. We love this sushi set for its authentic look and the opportunity to learn to use chopsticks (to really encourage those fine motor skills). Other great wooden play food from Hape: salad, fruit, veggies, and pizza.

Includes 19 pieces: 2 chopstick sets, 9 sushi pieces, 2 wasabi bowls, soy sauce, tray

A Soft Alternative

If you’re tired of all the hard materials that typically make up toddler and preschooler toys, we hear you. So here’s a food set that’s a little softer to the touch (and the mouth, in case your child is determined to actually bite their play food). Made of durable felt, these foods won’t break, tear, scratch or otherwise damage easily. Unfortunately, they can’t go in the washing machine, but you can wipe them with a damp cloth. And once your tot has exhausted all their sandwich varieties, there’s also a 42-piece felt pizza set.

Additional Specs
Child Guidelines Ages 3–7 years
Includes 33 pieces, including breads, meats, condiments and vegetables

Canned Goods

To make their play kitchen feel as real as possible, your kid’s probably going to want some canned food. Rather than sacrifice that canned corn you planned to make, here’s a set made of cardboard that looks just like the real stuff (contains no real food). The plastic lids are easily removable—no can opener necessary—so kiddo can go through all the motions of food prep, however minute.

Additional Specs
Child Guidelines Ages 3 years+
Includes 10 cardboard cans w/ removable plastic lids

Refrigeration Necessary

If your child’s play kitchen comes with a fridge, what do you plan to stock it with? Toy refrigerators won’t actually keep anything cold, and that’s where this fridge food set comes in handy. It’s all solid wood—hand painted, even—so there’s no risk of sour milk or melted ice cream. But heads up: none of it can actually be opened, so an element of realism is slightly lost for toddlers who might prefer it.

Includes 9 pieces: butter, cheese, frozen vegetables, bologna, ice cream, yogurt, waffles, orange juice, milk

A Smarter Dessert

Put your little baker to the test with these sweet puzzle cupcakes. Each cake bottom has a different-shaped hole that fits one matching frosting top, so your toddler will have to do a little thinking to get their cupcakes properly decorated. The set also comes with an 8-cupcake pan that’s about 8” wide by 6” long, so double check that it can fit inside your play kitchen’s oven.

Additional Specs
Child Guidelines Ages 2 years+
Includes 17 pieces: pan, 8 cakes, 8 frostings
