The Best Washable Nursery Rugs That Can Last Through Early Childhood

During most of the first year of your child’s life, your baby is likely going to spend a ton of time in your room, but eventually, the baby’s nursery will be their home base for a lot of activities, from bedtime and napping to playing and lounging.

Unlike the crib that you’ll switch out for a big kid bed and the changing table that you’ll swap for a more functional dresser, your nursery rug is a room element that you’ll likely keep as your kiddo grows up. With that being said, you can expect a host of spills, accidents and other stain-causing incidents to go down in there too. That’s where a washable rug comes in. Instead of panic setting in when your baby decides to hold their bottle upside down on their adorable nursery rug (or worse), you can feel at ease knowing that your washable rug can be laundered without breaking out your carpet cleaner.

A few things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for a washable nursery rug is that many of them are on the thinner side (to make it easier to machine wash) and made of polyester (though wool and cotton are out there too). Some washable nursery rugs will be a one-piece design while other brands have a thinner rug layer that can be separated from the backing and tossed in the washing machine. While they can be machine washed, many washable rugs should be lined dried (read the care instructions for more details).

Over the years, washable rugs have come a long way, and are now available in a variety of sizes, shapes and styles, making it easier to find one that fits your style and vision for your nursery.

Here are the best machine-washable rugs to complete your dream baby nursery.

Best Neutral Washable Nursery Rugs

Neutral colors, like tans, beiges and other cool tones, are insanely popular in home decor—nurseries included. These neutral washable rugs will be the perfect foundation for the rest of your decor.

Best Mature Design Washable Nursery Rugs

Little Crown Interiors designer Naomi Coe predicted that mature patterns, colors and styles would be popping up in nursery designs all year (think Nancy Myers vibes). Instead of bright, clean neutrals and white, Coe says that moodier, richer colors and detailed patterns are trending.

Best Thematic Washable Nursery Rugs

Even though some modern nurseries lean more towards adult tastes, many parents-to-be love a cute theme—but elevated. That means swapping out the loud primary colors and cartoon-y characters for stylish plays on classics.

Best Colorful Washable Nursery Rugs

A burst of color, even if the rest of your nursery is on the plainer side, can add fun brightness that both you and your baby will love.

Best Patterned Washable Nursery Rugs

If you need a bit of inspiration for your nursery design but don’t want to totally lean into a theme, a pattern can be the focal point of the room. You can choose an easy-to-decorate-around gingham pattern or something more unique like flowers or bows.

Best Round Washable Nursery Rugs

When you think of a rug, a rectangular one probably comes to mind, but a round rug could be a better choice for smaller or shared spaces.
