Baby + Family Halloween Costumes That Are Almost Too Cute to Handle

Dressing your baby in cute outfits is fun any day of the week, but Halloween is when you can really have a blast. Whether you decide to go all out and construct a costume from scratch or buy one, there are tons of fun ways to get in on the dress-up holiday (even if your baby is too little to munch on the spoils of their hard work).
Need some inspiration? We asked Babylist families what their kids are dressing up as this year, and one trend stood out: coordinating family costumes are big. Dinosaurs and Jurassic Park led the costume ideas, with plenty of pumpkins, superheroes and Toy Story characters in the mix, too. And then there were the ideas we never could have predicted (a baby hot dog with Costco-worker parents, anyone?). We sprinkled more ideas from Babylist families throughout this guide, along with costumes you can buy and plenty of inspiration for making your own.
Halloween Costumes for Newborns
Newborn Halloween costumes don’t need to be elaborate. Soft, simple options like bodysuits, sleepers and cozy one-pieces can get your baby in on the fun without adding a complicated costume to the mix. And since they may sleep through half the festivities anyway, comfort is a pretty good place to start.
Halloween Costumes for Older Babies
If you’re stuck on an idea, take a cue from what your baby loves right now. Babylist families told us they’re turning favorite animals, toys, foods and even vehicles into costumes this year. We heard everything from a favorite teddy bear and stuffed llama to grapes, a blueberry, a garbage truck and a Jellycat Sky Dragon.
Halloween Costumes for Twins & Siblings
It might not be in a rule book, but it just feels right to coordinate twins’ Halloween costumes. You can go for an exact match (two pumpkins, two chickens) or a pair that belongs together, like ketchup and mustard or peas and carrots.
The same idea works for siblings. Babylist families told us they’re pairing up Woody and Buzz, Spider-Man and a pumpkin, Pebbles and Bam Bam and even a chicken and Buzz Lightyear. And if your kids have completely different costume plans? Let them run with it—the unexpected combinations can be part of the fun.
Family Halloween Costumes
Sometimes the easiest way to pick a family costume is to start with your kid’s idea and figure out how everyone else fits in. And judging by our Halloween poll, Babylist families are very good at committing to the bit.
A few of our favorite plans:
Raccoon: “Raccoon (trash panda). Mom and dad will be garbage cans.”
Chicken: “Kid as a chicken and we are chicken tenders.”
Hot dog: “My three month old baby is going to be a hot dog and my husband and I are going as Costco workers.”
Baby vampire: "A vampire! (Because she likes to bite.)”
Jurassic Park: “Our 18 month old will be a velociraptor, my husband will be the Jurassic Park jeep and I'll be Ellie Sattler from Jurassic Park.”
Wicked: “My three year old will be Elphaba...my one-year-old will be Dorothy including the red slippers. I’ll be Glinda and my husband will be The Scarecrow.”
Men in Black: “My husband and I are dressing as the Men in Black and our son will be an alien.”
Whether everyone matches perfectly or the connection requires a little explaining, that’s half the fun.
Character Halloween Costumes
When we asked Babylist families about their Halloween plans, character costumes came up again and again. Spider-Man and the Spidey crew were among the most popular picks, along with Toy Story, Frozen, Pokémon, Paw Patrol and Monsters, Inc. If your baby is too young to have a favorite character yet, consider this your chance to introduce them to one of yours.
DIY Halloween Costumes
You don’t need Pinterest-level crafting skills to pull off a memorable Halloween costume. Babylist families are getting creative with things they already own, homemade costumes and ideas inspired by whatever their kid is into right now.
A few ideas from our Halloween poll:
Use what’s already in the drawer: “A hand-me-down skeleton [bodysuit] because it’s already in our drawer LOL.”
Turn their current obsession into a costume: “Our girl is grape obsessed, so this year she will be a cluster of grapes.”
Make the accessories part of the fun: “Rubber ducky…with a wagon as a tub.”
Go delightfully specific: “A sun with battery operated twinkle lights all over to shine.”
Prepare for a last-minute plot twist: “My three-year-old insists she wants to be a purple crayon, but somehow I know it will change to red last minute, so we'll have options!”

Babywearing Halloween Costumes
If your baby will be spending most of Halloween in a carrier, make it part of the costume. You can build a whole theme around your carrier or keep things simple with a few costume details. (Bonus: no wrestling your baby into an elaborate getup they may want off five minutes later.)
The best ideas work with how you already wear your baby rather than getting in the way of it. Take some inspiration from these creative babywearing costumes, then put your own spin on them.
