Winter Baby On The Way? Here's The Baby Gear You Should Add For The Season
Keep baby warm, comfortable and ready to enjoy the winter season with these cozy (and super useful) picks.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the thought of bringing home a newborn baby during the winter months, we’re here to ease that worry. With the right cold-weather baby clothes and gear, you can enjoy your newborn snuggles indoors and outside. While there is some gear that all parents will need, no matter the time of year they’ll be bringing home baby, for the winter months, there are specific products (like cozy pajamas and cold-weather stroller accessories) that’ll help keep your baby warm, comfortable and cozy all season long. And even if your baby isn’t actually born in the winter season, these products will come in handy when their first winter season rolls around.
To help us compile our list of winter-y registry essentials and nice-to-haves, we polled real Babylist parents in our newsletter to ask them about the items they used the most to winterize their baby (spoiler: lots of wool).
Whether you live in a part of the world that hovers under 40 degrees in the winter or in a place that snows for months on end, we’ve got you covered with a wide array of winter baby products that’ll get you through the chilliest months of the year.
If you want a TL;DR for bundling up your baby for outdoor adventures during the winter, here's a quick how-to:
Winter Baby Layering Guide
Heading Outdoors
Base Layer - On Baby's Body
- Footed pajamas or onesie with pants
- Wool or fleece-lined leggings
- Wool socks or fleece booties with cotton socks
Middle Layer - Over Clothing
- Fleece pram or bunting
- Ensure there are no gaps between layers
Outer Layer - In the Stroller/Carrier
- Stroller footmuff or car seat cover
Don't Forget the Extremities
- Merino wool beanie (baby loses heat through their head!)
- Mittens (integrated or detachable from snowsuit)
- Extra layer of socks in very cold weather
Pro Tip: Feel baby's chest or back of neck to check temperature—not their hands or feet, which are naturally cooler.
Nursery and Decor
Burt's Bees Baby Organic Cotton Jersey Fitted Crib Sheet - Tan Bee, 1
From $21.95When it’s time to put your baby down for the night, this organic cotton jersey sheet will ensure their bed is toasty and comfortable. Unlike lighter materials like linen or muslin, jersey knit does a better job at trapping heat, keeping your baby warm while they snooze.
Frida Baby Frida Baby x Babylist 3-in-1 Humidifier, Diffuser & Nightlight - Sage Green
From $31.49Cooler temps often mean dry skin and congestion thanks to winter colds (plus, central heat can add to drying out baby’s delicate skin). A good cool-mist humidifier is a winter nursery staple to help moisten the air and soothe your baby. This one has a clean, simple design, adjustable mist output and no filters to worry about cleaning or replacing.
Even if you’re lukewarm on the usefulness of a wipe warmer, you have to admit that a chilly wipe in the middle of winter is not a recipe for a peaceful diaper-changing experience. This wipe warmer has a soft nightlight, keeps your wipes at room temperature and since it warms from the top, you don’t have to worry about your wipes drying out.
Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Scalloped Receiving Blanket - Stone/White/Rocking Horse
From $63.58Although it's not safe to use loose blankets in your little one’s sleep space for the first year, you’ll find plenty of other uses for this cozy blanket. It’s perfect for keeping baby warm in the stroller or car seat (over their straps), as a play mat on the floor and so much more.
On the Go
7AM Enfant Blanket 212 - Black Plush, 6 M-4 T
From $215.00Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you’re banned from leaving your home. With the right gear, like this super cozy footmuff, your baby can hang out in their warm bubble while you stroll around. The material is comfortable and warm (and waterproof), plus it’s compatible with all stroller brands.
7AM Enfant Warmmuffs - Black Plush

Created with newborns in mind, this small, lightweight carrier is an easy way to keep baby close when the temperature starts to drop. It’s super simple to use and a breeze to take on and off and if you want an extra layer of warmth, add a carrier cover.
Skip Hop Stroll & Go Car Seat Cover - Heather Gray
From $39.99This universal-fit car seat cover is windproof and water-resistant, ensuring your little one stays warm and dry when it’s cold outside. And since it attaches around the car seat, you won’t have to worry about it interfering with straps or buckles. This shouldn’t be used when the seat is attached to the base inside your car.
Momcozy Portable Water & Milk Warmer
From $59.99While a portable bottle warmer is always a nice-to-have item, for the wintertime, it’s even better. Your baby’s milk will be pretty chilly when you’re on the road, thanks to it being cold outside. A bottle warmer will quickly bring it up to a drinkable temperature. This one by Momcozy can heat cold breast milk up to 93 degrees in just five minutes and water to 104 degrees in just three minutes.
Health and Safety
Boogie Boogie Wipes Saline Nose Wipes (6 Pack) - White, Unscented, 30
From $4.49Snotty noses and cold weather go hand in hand. Boogie wipes are small towelettes soaked in a natural saline solution, so when you attempt to chip away at dried-up snot on your baby’s face, it’s much easier and far less irritating on their skin. I used them with my older kid over a decade ago and bought them again for my toddler because they’re just that good.
Babies have super sensitive skin and tend to drool a ton, which is a bad combination in cold weather. This nourishing balm stick by Aquaphor can help keep their skin protected under a layer of avocado oil and shea butter while healing their drool rash.
Frida Baby Sick Day Prep Kit
From $34.99No one wants to think about their baby getting sick—but it’s bound to happen, especially during the winter. This kit has everything you need for baby’s first sick day, including the infamous NoseFrida, a paci-style medicine dispenser, baby chest rub and more.
Kinsa QuickCare Digital Thermometer
From $24.98And speaking of sick days, you’ll always want a thermometer on hand to check your baby’s temperature if they’re feeling not-so-great. This one is fast, reliable and accurate and even links to an app on your smartphone for next-step guidance.
Tubby Todd Tubby Todd x Babylist Baby’s Skincare Essentials Gift Set - Fragrance Free
From $58.00Even if you’re planning on spending a lot of time indoors during your baby’s first winter, cold weather and indoor heat can irritate baby’s sensitive new skin. Clothing and Accessories
ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Sack 2.5 Tog - Sage, Newborn
From $64.95Made of organic cotton, this swaddle is designed to keep your baby warm at night without causing them to break out in a sweat. The best part is that you can swaddle them when they are little, keeping their reflexes in control. This one has a TOG rating of 2.5, which measures how well a fabric traps heat; the higher the TOG, the warmer the material will keep your baby. Another bonus, when they’ve outgrown a swaddle, you can pop their arms out for safe (and warm) sleep.
Zutano Cozie Fleece Bootie - Heather Grey, 3 M
From $16.50Made of super-warm sherpa fleece, these booties snap on, helping them stay on your baby’s feet instead of flying off with every kick. If you live in a very cold climate, you can pair them with socks for an extra layer of warmth. Otherwise, these booties can be used in place of socks.
Burt's Bees Baby Organic Sleep & Play Footie Pajamas - Good Night Sky, Newborn
From $18.95Soft, warm, affordable, and available in tons of gender-neutral designs, these organic footed PJs are a winter baby must-have. Perfect for wearing during the day and at night for sleep, socks and a onesie can be layered underneath for extra warmth.
Designed to go over your baby’s clothes, this pram has a sherpa fleece exterior and a soft, combed cotton on the inside. It adds an extra layer of warmth and works well in really cold climates. Plus the hood will keep their heads covered and warm.
When we polled Babylist parents, fleece lined pants came up a few times, and for good reason. While leggings are an easy go-to when it comes to dressing your baby, they are typically made of thin material. This fleece-lined pair from Primary will keep your baby’s legs warm and are just as comfortable as standard leggings. If you live in extra chilly climates, consider upgrading to merino wool leggings. The material naturally retains warmth even in wet climates.
Unlike adults, your baby’s head accounts for much of their body. This means, if they are out in the cold without a hat, they’ll be reducing their core body temperature much faster than an adult. This merino wool beanie will help retain heat and keep them warm.
Aside from booties, wool socks are a nice-to-have wintertime wardrobe staple to have on hand. This pair, recommended by real Babylist parents we polled in our newsletter, are made of a fuzzy, comfy wool terry material.
7AM Enfant Benji Snowsuit Bebe - Mirage Quilted, 3-6 M
From $110.00When the first sprinkle of snow for the season starts to fall, you’ll be thanking yourself for registering for an insulated snowsuit like this one. The exterior is made of water-repelling material, so they won’t be soaked after rolling around in the snow. And the inside, including the hood, is lined with a plush material. The integrated footies ensure there’s no gaps, so you don’t have to worry about wisps of cold air getting into their suit. The best part—the snowsuit comes with detachable mittens.
