New parents are obsessed with sleep: our own and our baby’s (ask me how I know). The American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guidelines recommend room sharing—keeping your baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep—for the first six months of your little one’s life, and ideally up to a year. The best bedside sleepers keep baby safely and within arm’s reach so everyone can rest a little easier.

“Bedside sleepers are amazing for those first few months, especially if you're breastfeeding or recovering from a tricky delivery,” says Amanda DeLuca, pediatric sleep consultant and founder of the parenting app Riley. “You can comfort your baby without fully waking up, which helps everyone get more rest.”

Unlike traditional bassinets, bedside sleepers give you quick, hands-on access through a drop-down side or zip panel, so you can care for your baby without ever getting up. “Bedside sleepers are often touted as the safest way to bedshare with your baby—four walls mean that you are very unlikely to roll over onto your child, but they’re close enough that tending to them becomes a lot easier in the early days,” notes DeLuca.

Whether you’re looking for a bedside sleeper that doubles as a portable baby lounger for daytime or a compact bassinet for a smaller space, we’ve curated safe and stylish options for every family and bedroom setup.

How We Judged the Best Bedside Sleepers

Safety
We included only sturdy bedside sleepers that meet current CPSC and ASTM safety standards and are JPMA-certified. We also ensured that each pick featured a secure attachment system.
Adjustability
We prioritized bedside sleepers with adjustable heights to fit virtually any bed or frame.
Ease of use
Unlike babies, bedside sleepers should be fuss-free. We focused on models that are easy to set up, adjust and move with minimal effort.
Nice-to-haves
We also considered features that aren’t essential but make naps and nights easier, like storage pockets, soothing melodies and vibrations, portability and smart design.

Most Versatile Bedside Sleeper

Pros

  • Convenient 2-in-1 design converts to a portable lounger
  • 360° swivel for safe, close sleep and precise positioning
  • Smooth height adjustments
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • Large footprint and base
  • Legs can be a tripping hazard
  • Some parents complain of tilting

If you don’t want to be anchored to one room during naps or need to keep an eye on your baby while you sneak in a shower, the stylish Halo BassiNest Swivel Sleeper is a total lifesaver. It converts to a portable nest, letting your little one snooze or chill safely wherever you are. As one Babylist parent explains, “I had a C-section, so it was nice to be able to detach the basket and move it to the room I was spending time in during the day and then put it back overnight.”

DeLuca says this bedside bassinet also earns high praise from families, thanks to its unique 360° swivel feature, which truly makes a difference. It’s also the bedside sleeper she chose for her second child and the top pick among Babylist parents, with nearly 15% voting it as their favorite bedside bassinet in our annual Most Loved Baby Products survey. “You can easily pull your baby close from either side. It’s sturdy, the height adjustment works smoothly, though it’s definitely a bigger footprint in the bedroom,” she says.

“It’s been one of the most useful items we’ve had—our baby sleeps in it every night,” adds another parent. “The design is practical and well thought out, especially for middle-of-the-night feedings, and it offers a safe and cozy space that helps both baby and parents sleep more soundly.”

There are a few downsides to note. The BassiNest is on the larger side, and its splayed legs can make it tricky to tuck right up against your bed—or easy to trip over if you’re half-asleep. (The lower your bed frame, the bigger of an issue this will be.) And some parents have noted the bassinet can tilt slightly as babies get heavier.

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Simple setup
  • Convenient storage pocket
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Not ideal for taller beds
  • Not as portable as other options

This budget-friendly bedside sleeper is a minimalist’s dream. It’s affordable, practical and perfectly functional to keep your newborn safe, cozy and close without breaking the bank. Bonus: no tools or complicated setup required! “Parents love it for the price point and reliability,” says DeLuca. “It's straightforward without a lot of bells and whistles, which some families actually prefer—fewer things to potentially break or malfunction.”

The Beside Me Dreamer anchors securely to your bed with built-in straps to keep it stable through the night and features a six-position height adjustment to fit most adult beds. Convenient zip-down sides allow for easy baby access, and a small, built-in storage pocket keeps the essentials (think wipes, diapers and burp cloths) close by for exhausted parents. “It was so convenient with the side coming down so I could easily lift my baby out of it for night wakings,” noted one parent in our annual survey.

Because babies can be messy (hello, spit-ups and diaper blowouts), the included waterproof mattress cover provides an extra layer of protection and easily wipes clean, a nice perk.

Like all bedside sleepers that attach to an adult bed, note that this bassinet won’t work for all bed frames, especially taller ones. (If your bed sits lower to the ground like mine, however, it should line up nicely.) Some parents of picky sleepers note that the mattress feels a bit too firm, though Dr. Altman emphasizes that a firm, snug-fitting mattress is actually the safest place for babies to sleep. It also lacks wheels, but it’s lightweight enough and folds up for storage or travel

Additional Specs

  • Dimensions: 37″ x 22.5″ x 30.75″

  • Bassinet Height: Fits adult beds between 18.5” to 24” from the floor to the top of the adult mattress; features 6 adjustable heights

  • Weight: 22.2 lbs

  • Child Guidelines: up to 20 lbs or 0-5 mos; stop using when baby begins to push up on hands and knees or roll over (whichever comes first)

  • What’s Included: Bassinet, mattress and removable and washable cover and sheet

Pros

  • Compact design fits easily in small spaces
  • Generous built-in storage
  • Includes a carrying case for transport and storage
  • Wheels make it easy to move from room to room

Cons

  • Height isn’t adjustable, which may limit compatibility with some beds
  • Single zipper on the bottom storage area makes access a bit tricky
  • Extension kit needed for taller beds

Perfect for apartment living or smaller bedrooms, the Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 2 in 1 Co-Sleeper packs impressive functionality into a timeless, compact design. “The company has been refining this design for years. It's compact but still functional, which is exactly what some bedrooms need,” says DeLuca.

This bassinet fits neatly beside your bed without taking up too much room, and the generous built-in storage underneath, plus spacious side pockets, keeps diapers, wipes, swaddles and late-night feeding essentials organized within arm’s reach. The included carrying case makes it easy to stash away or bring along to a hotel, while two wheels let you glide it from room to room without breaking a sweat or your back.

“The best product I registered for is the Arm's Reach co-sleeper. It’s literally been a lifesaver as I adjust to newborn sleep patterns. I don’t know what I would have done without it,” says one Babylist parent. “The storage is amazing. It’s on both sides and it fits perfectly next to my bed. Also, my baby loves it.”

The biggest con of this bedside sleeper is that it isn’t height-adjustable. It can sit flush against most beds, but it may not line up perfectly with every bed height. (Leg extensions are available separately if you need a taller setup.) Some parents also find the single zipper on the bottom storage compartment a bit awkward to access, particularly in the middle of the night.

Additional Specs

  • Dimensions: 34” L x 20.5 W” x 32” H

  • Bassinet Height: Fits adult beds up to 24” from the floor to the top of the adult mattress (leg extension kit sold separately for beds taller than 24”)

  • Weight: 22 lbs

  • Child Guidelines: 0-5 mos or until baby is able to push up on its own

  • What’s Included: Bassinet, mattress, fitted sheet, travel bag, nylon strap and resistant plate and 2 wheels

Most Portable Bedside Sleeper

Pros

  • Wheels for easy mobility
  • Converts into a portable bassinet and changing table for extended use
  • Reversible mattress with a quilted sleep side and a waterproof changing side
  • Built-in soothing vibrations, music and a nightlight
  • Compact design great for small spaces

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No storage
  • Doesn’t roll well on carpet

This bassinet from Chicco combines the closeness of a bedside sleeper with the portability of a rolling bassinet, making it easy to keep your baby nearby—whether you’re folding laundry, washing dishes or chasing after older siblings.

As a bassinet, it slides neatly under your bed frame, and the adjustable height helps you align it perfectly with your mattress for safe, close nighttime access. The sides also lower easily, so you can reach or soothe your baby easily.

Parents also love the portability. “I loved that I could move it room to room and have my baby nap in different areas of the house if needed,” one Babylist parent shared. The dual-function handle and brake system keep it securely locked in place when you need it, specially handy when curious toddlers want to “help” check on the baby for the fifteenth time.

Another standout feature: a reversible mattress. One side is a cozy sleep surface; flip it over and it becomes a waterproof changing pad. “It also doubles as a changing table, which makes it last much longer than a traditional bassinet.” Add in built-in music, vibration, and a soft nightlight, and you’ve got a bassinet that covers those middle-of-the-night diaper changes and feedings without fumbling for your phone flashlight.

It’s definitely on the pricier side, but because you can use it well beyond the newborn stage, many parents say it’s worth the investment. Just note: it doesn’t have built-in storage for diapers or wipes, and it can be a bit harder to roll on carpet.

Additional Specs

  • Dimensions: 33.5”L x 28”W x 46”H

  • Bassinet Height: 24" to 33.5" (measured from floor to bottom of bassinet)

  • Weight: 33 lbs

  • Child Guidelines: Bedside sleeper and bassinet designed for infants up to 20 lbs or until infant begins to push up on hands and knees, whichever comes first; changing table is designed for children up to 35 lbs

  • What’s Included: Bedside bassinet, fitted sheet and waterproof mattress

What Is a Bedside Sleeper?

A bedside sleeper is similar to a bassinet or a mini crib but has one additional feature: a retractable side that can be raised and lowered in order to provide direct and easy access to your baby.

Many bedside sleepers also feature special safety straps or anchors that secure the sleeper to an adult bed. This provides additional stability to ensure the sleeper is secure, especially when the retractable wall is in use.

Bedside Sleepers and Sleep Safety

Bedside sleepers are required to meet the same safety standards as bassinets in order to be sold in the US. However, due to the lack of research or studies on bedside sleepers, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not officially recommend for or against them in their safe sleep guidelines.

There are some important safety checks you’ll want to put in place when using a bedside sleeper. Please consult your sleeper’s manual for specific instructions, but always keep these general safety guidelines in mind:

  • Always be sure the sleeper is securely and correctly attached to the adult bed per the manufacturer’s directions. Deluca recommends checking attachment points regularly “because daily use can cause loosening over time.”

  • There should never be more than a half-inch gap between the sleeper and the bed. Check this gap each time before use to be sure the sleeper is securely attached to the adult bed. If the gap exceeds a half inch, don’t use the sleeper—and never try to fill it with a blanket or other loose objects.

  • “Be mindful of your own blankets and pillows,” says certified pediatric sleep consultant Cara Dumaplin of TakingCaraBabies. “We don’t want any loose bedding or pillows going into your baby’s sleep space.”

  • “Use only the fitted sheets made for your specific sleeper, and resist the urge to add extra blankets or cute accessories,” advises DeLuca.

When Do You Need a Bedside Sleeper?

Like bassinets, bedside sleepers are ideal for the first few months of your baby’s life. Bedside sleepers offer an additional convenience factor when compared to traditional bassinets thanks to their retractable wall. You’ll be tending to your little one quite frequently during the newborn months, whether for overnight feedings and diaper changes or simply to check in on them. Being able to retract the sleeper’s side and reach your baby right from your bed is a pretty big plus, especially around 2 a.m.

Bedside sleepers are also a good choice for parents who’ve had a C-section and may not be able to stand up and reach over the sides of a crib or bassinet to pick up their little one.

Signs Your Baby Is Ready to Transition from a Bedside Sleeper

“Most bedside sleepers are safe to use until your baby reaches 15–20 pounds or around four to six months of age, whichever comes first,” says Altmann. She adds that another sign it’s time to transition is when your baby no longer fits comfortably in the sleeper. Dumaplin notes that it’s also time to move your baby out when they can roll independently, push up on their hands and knees, or outgrow the manufacturer’s age and weight recommendations for their bassinet.
